Analysis of air-to-air heat exchanger performance data taken under the Residential Standards Demonstration Program

Description: The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) initiated the Residential Standards Demonstration Program (RSDP) in 1983 to determine the costs and thermal performance improvements associated with increased levels of thermal integrity in new residences, as proposed by the Northwest Power Planning Council in the Model Conservation Standards (MCS). The program resulted in the construction of approximately 430 new residences, built to thermal performance standards, as dictated by the MCS in each of thre… more

The DIPSI (Direct Implicit Plasma Surface Interactions) computer code user's manual

Description: DIPSI (Direct Implicit Plasma Surface Interactions) is a one-dimensional, bounded particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation code designed to investigate the interaction of plasma with a solid surface, such as a limiter or divertor plate in a tokamak fusion device. Plasma confinement and transport may be studied in a system which includes an applied magnetic field (oriented normal to the solid surface) and/or a self-consistent electrostatic potential. The PIC code DIPSI is an offshoot of the PIC code TE… more

A waterjet mining machine for use in room and pillar mining operations

Description: A new mining machine is constructed for use in room and pillar mining operations. This machine uses the action of computer controlled, centrally located high pressure cutting lances to cut deep slots in a coal face. These slots stress relieve the coal ahead of the machine and outline blocks of coal. The movement forward of the machine then wedges up the lower block of coal. This wedging action is assisted by the gathering arms of the loader section of the machine, and by underlying oscillating … more

Measurements of radial profiles of He sup 2+ transport coefficients on TFTR (Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor)

Description: Measurements of the spatial structure of the transport coefficients of He{sup 2+} on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor is reported. He{sup 2+} profiles were measured using charge exchange spectroscopy after a helium puff into corotating L-mode plasmas. Modelling shows that the He{sup 2+} diffusivity is about 10 m{sup 2}/s near the plasma edge and drops to below 1 m{sup 2}/s inside of the q = 1 surface. The convective velocity ranges from 1--3 m/s near q = 1 to 20--40 m/s near the edge. The helium… more

Coal sector profile

Description: Coal is our largest domestic energy resource with recoverable reserves estimated at 268 billion short tons or 5.896 quads Btu equivalent. This is approximately 95 percent of US fossil energy resources. It is relatively inexpensive to mine, and on a per Btu basis it is generally much less costly to produce than other energy sources. Its chief drawbacks are the environmental, health and safety concerns that must be addressed in its production and consumption. Historically, coal has played a major… more

Columbia University flow instability experimental program: Volume 3. Single tube parallel flow tests

Description: The coolant in the Savannah River Site (SRS) production nuclear reactor assemblies is circulated as a subcooled liquid under normal operating conditions. This coolant is evenly distributed throughout multiple annular flow channels with a uniform pressure profile across each coolant flow channel. During the postulated Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA), which is initiated by a hypothetical guillotine pipe break, the coolant flow through the reactor assemblies is significantly reduced. The flow redu… more

FLOWTRAN benchmarking with onset of flow instability data from 1988 Columbia University single-tube OFI experiment

Description: Benchmarking FLOWTRAN, Version 16.2, with an Onset of Significant Voiding (OSV) criterion against measured Onset of Flow Instability (OFI) data from the 1988--89 Columbia University downflow tests has shown that FLOWTRAN with OSV is a conservative OFI predictor. Calculated limiting flow rates based on the Savannah River Site (SRS) OSV criterion were always higher than the measured flow rates at OFI. This work supplements recent FLOWTRAN benchmarking against 1963 downflow tests at Columbia Unive… more

Molecular biological enhancement of coal biodesulfurization. Fourth quarterly technical progress report

Description: The objective of this project is to produce one or more microorganisms capable of removing the organic and inorganic sulfur in coal. The original specific technical objectives of the project were to: clone and characterize the genes encoding the enzymes of the ``4S`` pathway (sulfoxide/sulfone/sulfonate/sulfate) for release of organic sulfur from coal; return multiple copies of genes to the original host to enhance the biodesulfurization activity of that organism; transfer this pathway into a f… more
