U.S. NAVY STRUCTURES. ANNEX 3.2 OF SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR'S REPORT OF ATOMIC WEAPON TESTS AT ENIWETOK, 1951

Description: Structures are subjected to a 50-kt blast, in order to obtain fundamental data on structures subjected to blast loading, to observe the response of the structures under this loading, and to determine the relative blast-resistance merits of several structural types. Modes of failure are determined. Shaped structures are found to be superdor to rectangular structures. Earth cover for the structures is also found to increase the blast resistance. It is found that standard Navy heavy bomb-proof str… more

Reconnaissance for a Uranothorianite-Bearing Lode in the Vicinity of the Headwaters of the Peace River, Candle Quadrangle, Seward Peninsula, Alaska

Description: From abstract: Reconnaissance in 1947 found uranothorianite and gummite associated with copper sulfides, iron oxides, molybdenite, gold, silver, bismuth, and thorite in placers of a headwater tributary of the Peace River in the eastern part of the Seward Peninsula, Alaska. Brief radiometric reconnaissance early in the summer of 1952 failed to locate the bedrock source of the radioactive minerals at the head of the Peace River, primarily because of the shielding-effect of widespread tundra cover… more

Non-Core Dry Hole Drilling at Cove Mesa, Arizona

Description: Abstract: A drilling program was conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission on Cove Mesa, Arizona to further develop uranium and vanadium ore reserves that are vital to the National Defense. The drilling was performed by the Minerals Engineering Company of Grand Junction, Colorado. Uranium and vanadium ore horizons are found in the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation on Cove Mesa.

The Distribution of Uranium-Vanadium Deposits in the Colorado Plateau Relative to Tertiary Intrusive Masses

Description: Introduction: Studies of uranium-vanadium occurrences in the Four Corners region show that, with the exception of the Lukachuai area, all of the major deposits in the Morrison formation are grouped around the various igneous masses which are scattered irregularly throughout the Colorado Plateau. The pattern of deposition varies from mountain group to mountain group and each will be described separately. Maps accompany this report to supplement the descriptions of ore occurrences in the vicinity… more

Experimental investigation of free-convection heat transfer in vertical tube at large Grashof numbers

Description: Report presents the results of an investigation conducted to study free-convection heat transfer in a stationary vertical tube closed at the bottom. The walls of the tube were heated, and heated air in the tube was continuously replaced by fresh cool air at the top. The tube was designed to provide a gravitational field with Grashof numbers of a magnitude comparable with those generated by the centrifugal field in rotating-blade coolant passages (10(8) to 10(13)). Local heat-transfer coefficien… more

A vector study of linearized supersonic flow applications to nonplanar problems

Description: Report presenting a vector study of the partial-differential equation of steady linearized supersonic flow. General expressions are derived which relate the velocity potential in the stream to the conditions on the disturbing surfaces. A discussion of problems dealing with planar bodies is given and the conditions for the solution to be unique are investigated.
