Progress Report - Studies on the Propagation of Gamma Rays in Air

Description: Initial rough measurements of the quality of the gamma radiation from Co-60 in air indicated agreement with the theoretical calculations of Spencer and Fano for an infinite water medium. Further experiments were performed, duplicating the conditions assumed in the calculations. Since the spectral region between 100 kev and 1 mev has already been examined by Hayward, it was decided to investigate in detail the region below 100 kev and above 1.0 mev. Total radiation dosage measurements were made … more

The Biological Effects of heavy Cosmic Ray Particles

Description: Technical report investigates creating a microbeam of deuterons to simulate cosmic rays and the results of brain irradiation, irradiation of the eye, and irradiation of hair follicles of mice. The report's conclusion was that "astronauts exposed to heavy primary particles over a period of some weeks would be expected to develop gray hairs, but this is the only significant biological damage they would suffer."

The Standard Molar Free Energy of Formation of MgCl2, CeCl3, ThCl4, and UCl3 Obtained by Solid State EMF Techniques

Description: Technical report about a study in the use of galvanic cells using solid electrolytes to obtain thermodynamic data at high temperatures to study the free energy of formation of chlorides using Daniell cells where all components are solid. "The experimental techniques used are presented, including cell construction, preparation of anhydrous materials, and the handling of reactive metals and hydroscopic materials for galvanic cells." from the abstract. Results are presented for magnesium chlorid… more

The Role of Internal Conversion in the Study of Isomeric Transitions

Description: A short review of the field of internal conversions. Isomeric transitions teach us many details of nuclear structure. In these studies electromagnetic theory is considered as a "tool". It is a quite quantitative tool in the case of "internal conversion" - a phenomenon which has been widely studied for many years. Internal conversion takes place in competition with γ-ray emission: a fraction of the nuclei in excited states decay by γ-ray emission, the remaining fraction by transferring the energ… more

The Temperature Dependence of Birefringence in Irradiated Polyethylene

Description: Technical report on a study where the birefringence of irradiated polyethylene was observed as a function of temperature. The data is consistent with a mechanism in which crosslinking limits the growth and annealing of crystallites. Crosslinks formed in material which was oriented at the time the crosslinks were formed, results in an oriented gel. This effect explains the birefringence and the persistence of nucleation sites at high temperatures.
