Design of the Argonne Low Power Reactor (ALPR)

Description: Report containing "[a] description (...) of the design of a prototype "packaged" nuclear power plant. The purpose of the plant is to alleviate fuel oil logistics and storage problems posed by remote auxiliary DEW Line radar stations north of the Arctic Circle. The ALPR (redesignated SL-1) is a 3 Mwt, heterogeneous, highly enriched uranium- fueled, natural-circulation boiling water reactor, cooled and moderated with light water. Steam at 300 psig, dry and saturated (421 deg F) is passed directly… more

Stimulation of the corneal blinking reflex by ionizing radiation

Description: Accelerated alpha particles from the Berkeley heavy-ion linear accelerator were used in a series of experiments designed to elucidate the conditions by which radiation can stimulate or modify nerve action in mammals. Single millisecond pulses in excess of 40,000 radsor pulse trains of less than 1 sec duration elicited the corneal blinking reflex when delivered to the cornea of unanesthetized rabbits. The lowest threshold dose was observed when the Bragg ionization peak was placed at 140 {mu} de… more

Report of trip to YTS - C91 test projectile

Description: As a part of the RAIL feasibility study, Operation Dorothe (March 1961) was conducted to determine if a liquid explosive could survive the acceleration of launch from a 155 mm howitzer. This operation was successful, although some structural difficulty was experienced with the test round (C-90). Upon completion of that exercise, it was decided to design a test round that could be used with the more viscous slurry-type explosives, and to fire several of these new rounds with inert filler prior t… more

High Explosive Crater Studies: Desert Alluvium

Description: From abstract: Crater dimensions have been determined for 23 explosions of 256-pound spherical TNT charges buried in desert alluvium. As opposed to previous work covering depths of burst as great as 6 feet, the work presented in this report extends knowledge of apparent crater radius and depth to depths of burst as great as 30 feet.

Evaluation of Some Integrals Arising in the Theory of Ionized Gases

Description: In some recent theories of the equation of state of classical ionized systems, the free energy depends on integrals of the form {integral}{sub 0}{sup {infinity}}[e{sup -{beta}V{sub s}}-1+{beta}V{sub s}-{beta}{sup 2}V{sub s}{sup 2}/2]r{sup 2}dr, where V{sub s} is a "screened" potential obtained from the real potential by summing certain infinite series of diagrams. This integral has been tabulated for V{sub s} appropriate to a potential {+-}(e{sup 2}/ r)(1 - e{sup -{gamma}r}). The equation of st… more

Study of Causes and Prevention of Hard Cake Formation During Out-of-Pile Circulation of Aqueous Thorium Oxide Slurries

Description: < = B 9 8 9 = = ; < eposits formed on surfaces of the containing system during circulation of aqueous ThO/sub 2/ slurries at high temperature. Although entire surfaces of systems were coated with 1/4 to 1/8-in.- thick thoria deposits, cake formation was usually localized, forming preferentially in the pump impeller. Frequently, impeller deposits accelerated bearing failure. Cake formation was usually accompanied by formation of equal dense spherical aggregates 5 to 60 mu in diameter which remai… more

IN-PILE MEASUREMENT OF THE ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY AND THERMOELECTRIC POWER OF SINTERED UO$sub 2$

Description: Two thin plates of high-density UO/sub 2/ were sandwiched together with thermocouples between them and pressed against the outer surfaces. The thermocouples were used as electrodes and the electrical resistivity of the UO/sub 2/ measured by the potential drop method using corresponding arms of the thermocouples as current lead-in wires and potential probes. The UO/sub 2/ was heated by its own fission heat and the electrical resistivity measured at temperatures from 50 to 972 deg C. Preirradiati… more
