Sodium-Air Accident Study for a Sodium Cooled Reactor. Technical Memorandum No. 20

Description: The design requirements of a containment building for a sodium-cooled reactor have been investigated from the point of view of a hypothetical sodium - air reaction. In particular, this study was directed toward the containment building of the Enrico Fermi Atomic Power Plant. The hypothetical accident assumes a major leak in the sodium system with a concurrent or earlier failure of the ventilation and cooling systems which allows air to enter the areas around the sodium system which are normally… more

Organic Coolant Reclamation. First Quarterly Progress Report for December 15, 1958 - March 15, 1959

Description: In research on developing a suitable method for organic coolant reclamation, several lines of attack are being followed simultaneously. Model compounds have been utilized in initial experiments. For the vapor phase hydrogenation-cracking study, apparatus has been constructed and several catalysts screened. A nickel on kieselguhr catalyst has been shown to be active in converting biphenyl to a mixture of benzene and toluene. Liquid phase hydrogenation techniques are under study for partial reduc… more

Scaling of Zirconium at Elevated Temperatures. Final Report

Description: The three phenomena observed in the scaling of zirconium, i.e., the change in scaling rate, the color change of the oxide, and growth of the underlying metal, were investigated in the temperature range of 600 to 1300 C. Three grades of zirconium, varying in impurity content, were studied in atmospheres of air, oxygen nitrogen, and oxygen-nitrogen mixtures. The three phenomena were found to occur in each grade of zirconium investigated and in all atmospheres except nitrogen. The times required f… more

Status Report on a Study of the Use of Furnace Calorimetry for the Rapid Determination of Specific Heat of Solids at High Temperatures

Description: This report covers the period from February 1, 1959 through April 30, 1959. A method of measuring specific heat represented by the formula oy melts below T = hK/sub 1/ + (-q/k)K/sub 2/ is reported. K/sub 1/ is a function of thermocouple locations in the crucible wall and the thermal diffusivity of the crucible material, while K/sub 2/ is a function of the thermocouple locations and the thermal conductivity of the crucible material. To demonstrate this phenomenon, coating of suspended MgO was ap… more

Exploration of Radiometric Methods

Description: The compilation of possible analyses in aqueous solution is nearly complete. A chart has been constructed showing the elements which may be determined radiometrically. The radiometric general scheme of analysis has been roughly blocked out. The next-planned phase is to select specific reagents and determine the details of such analysis.

The Cobalt Transformation

Description: The fcc hcp transformation in cobalt powder (equilibrium temperature = 417 C) was studied by x-ray methods and correlated with the density of stacking faults in both phases. Only the hcp phase is present in the cold-worked powder. The line broadening due to local strains and small particle sizes can be essentially removed by annealing at 300 C, leaving a residual broadening that permits a quantitative determination of the density of random growth and deformation faults. The latter are present i… more

Results of Parallel Flow Oscillator Studies. Progress Report No. 2

Description: From the results of the tests it is clear that changing from series to parallel flow effects little or no change i the nature of the reactivity feedback. The physical processes which characterize the magnitude and time dependence of the negative power coefficient of reactivity are apparently identical in both instances. Accordingly, it is reasonable to infer that the conclusions reached as he result of the series flow studies are still valid. These are :(1) the overall power (temperature) coeff… more

Dynamic n-Measurements on the CEA Magnet Model Mark II under AC and Biased Operation

Description: A method is described to measure dynamic magnetic fields and field gradients to a high accuracy in a strong focusing synchrotron. It employs comparative techniques, peaking strips for timing and an electronic integrator. The method is sensitive down to fields of about 100 gauss. The absolute n-value (field gradient divided by field- is measured to 0.25%, whereas a relative n- distribution over a magnet can be measured to 0.1%. Data are given for CEA magnet Model Mark II between 100 and 4000 gau… more

On the Existences of a Magnetic and Focusing Length in a Synchrotron

Description: Measurements of S and s values indicate that existence of two different effective lengths in the azimuthal direction. We call them equivalent magnetic length and equivalent focusing length respectively. We demonstrate that the first one is the length to be used for the calculation of the radius and the second one in the calculation of the field gradient values. The formulas for the structure of the Cambridge Electron Accelerator are derived on this basis.

The System Zirconium-Iron-Tin. Status Report No. 4 for July 1, 1957- March 31, 1958

Description: A study of the solubility limits of iron and tin in alpha zirconium at temperatures below 500 deg C is in progress. Dilute alloys were prepared by arc- melting using the highest purity materials. Heat treatment of the alloys involves homogenization at 800 deg C followed by severe cold work prior to extended anneals at temperatures between 200 and 500 deg C in 50-degree intervals. Metallographic examination of annealed and quenched structures is the primary mode of investigation. Some magnetic s… more

Crud Pick-up by Mixed Bed Ion Exchange

Description: The residual capacity of mixed resins during the first nine weeks of contact was determined with a synthetic crud in aqueous solution (crud is primary loop water containing suspended corrosion products) containing not less than 5 g of crud per 100 ml of wet resin, and it was compared with the residual capacity of individual cation and anion resins under similar conditions. When fresh anion and cation resins individually and mixed were contacted with a fresh synthetic crud in the range 1.33 to 7… more

Injection Trajectories and Beam Matching for the Cambridge Electron Accelerator

Description: "ABS>Injection trajectories were calculated for different injection conditions for the Cambridge Electron Accelerator, considering also the effect of magnetic fringing fields. The general problem of matching the emittance of the linac to the acceptance of the synchrotron in the transversal phase space is considered, and it is shown that this can be done by a set of two quadrupole lenses. In order to eliminate rudial betatron oscillations due to energy deviations of the injected particles, a pul… more
