234-5 bank tank circulation studies

Description: In the Plutonium Reclamation Facility a critically-safe geometry of the processing vessels, combined with economical utilization of building space, has resulted in manifolded, vertical tanks for blending, receiving, holding, etc. The pumps attached to the bottom-outlet manifolds of the tanks are of a canned motor type. The extremely short life of these pumps (considerably below that expected even in severe abrasive and corrosive service) prompted a series of studies using glass tanks containing… more

1969 audit of SRP radioactive waste

Description: This report summarizes releases of radioactive waste to the environs of the Savannah River Plant during the calendar year 1969. Total quantities of radioactive waste released from plant startup through 1969 are also reported. Accuracy is not always implied to the degree indicated by the number of significant figures reported. Values were not rounded off, since data will be used in future cumulative summaries. No explanations are given for unusual releases; this information may be found in the R… more

1978 annual report, INEL geothermal environmental program

Description: The objective of the Raft River Geothermal Environmental Program, in its fifth year, is to characterize the beneficial and detrimental impacts resulting from the development of moderate-temperature geothermal resources in the valley. This report summarizes the monitoring and research efforts conducted as part of this program in 1978. The results of these monitoring programs will be used to determine the mitigation efforts required to reduce long-term impacts resulting from geothermal developmen… more

Absolute length measurement at high pressure

Description: A length-measurement systcm is described that can make absolute length- change measurements of a meter-long specimen within a pressure vessel (to pressures of 8 kbar) with a fractional error of 3 x 10/sup -8/ even when changes in length of 4 cm occur. Possible uses of such a system for measuring the volume thermal expansivity (at pressure) and the isothermal bulk modulus (at pressure) are described. Moreover, it is noted that, when this system is combined with an ultrasonic velocity measurement… more

Absolute measurements of the /sup 233/U (n,f) cross section between 0. 13 and 8. 0 MeV. [Cross sections, 0. 13 to 8. 0 MeV]

Description: The fast neutron fission cross section of /sup 233/U was measured absolutely between 0.13 and 8.0 MeV. The absolute cross section values were obtained by low geometry alpha counting and isotopic dilution analysis of various /sup 233/U samples, 2..pi..-detection of the fission fragments with an ionization chamber, and the measurement of the neutron flux with several black neutron detectors. Absolute cross sections were obtained with a 2 to 3% uncertainty over the most important energy range.

Accelerated/abbreviated test methods, Study 4 of Task 3 (encapsulation) of the Low-Cost Silicon Solar Array Project. Eighth quarterly progress report, January--March 1978

Description: To meet the goals of the LSSA program, solar cell encapsulants must provide protection for 20 years. Consequently, the objective of the present program is to develop methodology for making confident predictions of encapsulant performance at any exposure site in the U.S.A. During the first year of the program, inherent weatherability was studied. Inherent weatherability is controlled by the three weather factors common to all exposure sites: insolation, temperature, and humidity. Emphasis was fo… more

Accuracy of small diameter sheathed thermocouples for the core flow test loop

Description: This report summarizes the research and development on 0.5-mm-diameter, compacted, metal sheathed thermocouples. The objectives of this research effort have been: to identify and analyze the sources of temperature measurement errors in the use of 0.5-mm-diameter sheathed thermocouples to measure the surface temperature of the cladding of fuel-rod simulators in the Core Flow Test Loop (CFTL) at ORNL; to devise methods for reducing or correcting for these temperature measurement errors; to estima… more

Acoustic and turbulent agglomeration of sodium aerosols. Quarterly report, January 1, 1977--March 31, 1977

Description: Tests of turbulent and acoustic agglomeration of captive sodium fire aerosols at concentrations of 0.1 to 20 gm/m/sup 3/ were conducted in 90 m/sup 3/ and 0.65 m/sup 3/ vessels to evaluate these mechanisms for direct application air cleaning systems. Aerosol mass concentration decay with time was monitored by sequential filter samples. Turbulence was generated mechanically with a 51 cm diameter centrifugal fan impeller and a reverberant acoustic field was created with an electronic siren. The e… more

Acoustic emission intrusion detector

Description: In order to improve the security of handling special nuclear materials at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant, a sensitive acoustic emission detector has been developed that will detect forcible entry through block or tile walls, concrete floors, or concrete/steel vault walls. A small, low-powered processor was designed to convert the output from a sensitive, crystal-type acoustic transducer to an alarm relay signal for use with a supervised alarm loop. The unit may be used to detect forcible entry throug… more

Additive enhancement of short pulse flashlamps

Description: A key factor in the development of iodine photodisassociation lasers is the improvement of pump lamp efficiency in the 250 to 300 nm pump band at pulsewidths of about 10 ..mu..s. Previous work by Gusinow showed that certain metal additives appeared to enhance pump lamp output in the 250 to 300 nm region by as much as a factor of three. This had been determined by comparing microdensitometer traces of spectrograms of doped and undoped lamps. The principal problems noted with these lamps were a s… more
