Combustion in the Wake as a Means of Body-Drag Reduction as Determined from Free-Flight Tests of 40-Millimeter Shells

Description: "The results of free-flight drag tests of 40-millimeter shells conducted by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics for the Ballistic Research Laboratories, Ordnance Department, U. S. Army, are presented. A drag reduction at supersonic speeds of approximately 20 percent of the projectile's drag was obtained by combustion in the wake of the projectile in flight" (p. 1).

Critical mass information applied to purex and recuplex design

Description: Some time ago, a series of experiments (the P-11 project) were conducted to determine the critical mass of plutonium in variously sized and shaped vessels and with various solution concentrations. These experiments were rather general in nature, hence, it is necessary to interpret the data to the specific critical mass problems of interest in separation processes. The design of new continuous flow separation processes calls for even further extrapolations of these data to vessel geometries far … more

Effect of Capture on the Slowing-Down Length of Neutrons in Hydrogenous Mixtures Containing Uranium

Description: Memorandum presenting a rigorous expression for the slowing-down length of neutrons in hydrogenous media under the assumption that the nonhydrogen nuclei have infinite mass and that capture is absent. Two expressions have been applied to the same sample mixture, a uranium-235 and water mixture with the ratio of hydrogen to uranium nuclei chosen as 25.

Estimation of Hydrodynamic Impact Loads and Pressure Distributions on Bodies Approximating Elliptical Cylinders With Special Reference to Water Landings of Helicopters

Description: "An approximate method for computing water loads and pressure distributions on lightly loaded elliptical cylinders during oblique water impacts is presented. The method is of special interest for the case of emergency water landings of helicopters. This method makes use of theory developed and checked for landing impacts of seaplanes having bottom cross sections of V and scalloped contours. An illustrative example is given to show typical results obtained from the use of the proposed method of … more

Experimental investigation of the effect of rear-fuselage shape on ditching behavior

Description: Report presenting an experimental investigation to determine the effect of changes in shape of the rear fuselage of an airplane on ditching behavior. The behavior of the models was recorded with a high-speed camera, the records were analyzed, and the data is presented as curves of speed, attitude, and center-of-gravity height plotted against time.

Identification and Occurrence of Uranium and Vanadium Minerals From the Colorado Plateaus

Description: Abstract: "This report, designed to make available to field geologists and others information on identification and occurrence of uranium minerals of the Colorado Plateaus, contains physical properties, X-ray data, and in some instances results of chemical and spectrographic analysis of 24 uranium and 17 vanadium minerals. Also included is a table giving the optical properties of uranium minerals and a list of locations of mines from which the minerals have been identified."

Interim Report on a Fatigue Investigation of a Full-Scale Transport Aircraft Wing Structure

Description: Note presenting results of an investigation of the fatigue strength of several full-scale aircraft wing structures. The 34 fatigue failures which resulted from the tests were of four main types and occurred in three principal localities on the test wings. Results regarding the definition of fatigue failure, load history of specimens, description of fatigue failures, spread in fatigue life, stress concentration factors, rate of crack growth, and effect of fatigue damage on natural frequency and … more

A Method for Determining Cloud-Droplet Impingement on Swept Wings

Description: From Summary: "The general effect of wing sweep on cloud-droplet trajectories about swept wings of high aspect ratio moving at subsonic speeds is discussed. A method of computing droplet trajectories about yawed cylinders and swept wings is presented, and illustrative droplet trajectories are computed. A method of extending two-dimensional calculations of droplet impingement on nonswept wings to swept wings is presented."

Precipitation of plutonium(IV) oxalate in Task I

Description: Laboratory experience on the precipitation of Pu(IV) oxalate is summarized. Filterable Pu(IV) oxalate with a cake density of 0.6 to 0.7 g Pu/cm/sup 3/ cake was precipitated from Redox PR solutions containing 10 to 200 g/l Pu and 2 to 6 M HNO/sub 3/. Filtration ease increased with strike temperature from 35 to 60/sup 0/C. Optimum conditions for pre-reduction of Pu(VI) to (IV), precipitation, digestion, filtration and washing were determined for 60 g/l Pu. Separation factors of 80, 40, 20, and 12… more
