Applicability of chemical getter beds to scavenge tritium from inert gases

Description: Chemical getters can be used to scavenge tritium from inert gases. Cerium, which forms a hydride with a low dissociation pressure, has high reactivity, and is relatively inexpensive, is a good candidate getter material for such a scavenger system. Mathematical models for using cerium in both fixed- and fluidized-bed reactors predict satisfactory performance. Moreover, the capital cost of a gettering system, estimated to be between $115,000 and $166,000 (m/sup 3//s) flow, is competitive with tha… more

Application of quality assurance guidelines to the high pressure gas system, building 331. [LLL facility for filling pressure vessels with tritium]

Description: Major improvements have been made to decrease the tritium release potential for LLL's tritium-handling facilities in Bldg. 331. Some of the major problems and solutions in designing and building the High Pressure Gas System, which was the first system to be rebuilt are described. To increase system safety, it was necessary to specify material and processes used in component manufacture, to inspect all materials and processes to ensure compliance with specifications, to use proper joint design, … more

Activities of the Physical Data Group. [Lawrence Livermore Laboratory]

Description: A system is described in which neutron interaction data are collected from nuclear physics laboratories throughout the world, organized, evaluated, and then stored for easy access in a computer network. Computer codes that use the data to solve neutron interaction problems were also developed. The system supplies reliable up-to-date data, selects specific types of data on request, provides output in a variety of forms (reports, microfiche, microfilm), and functions rapidly and efficiently. 3 fi… more

Single particle behavior in plasmas

Description: The paper follows the history of a neutral atom or molecule into a plasma--ionization, dissociation, radiation,--until it becomes a set of charged particles moving in the electromagnetic fields of the plasma system. The various useful forms of the method of averaging are displayed and applied to calculation of constants of motion. The breakdown of these constants is discussed along with some of the implications for fusion systems.

Establishment of the National Energy Extension Service Advisory Board

Description: Draft documents necessary to establish the National Energy Extension Service Advisory Board in accordance with the Federal Advisory Committee Act and DOE procedures are presented. Part II describes the potential interest representation on the Board and recommends processes for identifying and selecting individuals to recommend for appointment. Part III presents EES' expectations for the Board in fulfilling its responsibilities. Part IV describes the operational relationships between DOE and the… more

Feasibility study for the computerized automation of the Laboratory Services Branch of EPA Region IV. [Chemical analysis of surface water samples]

Description: This report is a study of the feasibility of computerized automation of the Laboratory Services Branch of the Environmental Protection Agency's Region IV. The LSB provides chemical analytical support for a number of EPA divisions; its primary function at present is compliance monitoring, field surveys, and oil identification. Automation of the LSB is not only feasible but also highly desirable. Automation systems are proposed that will make major improvements in analytical capacity, quality con… more

Characterization and analysis of Devonian shales as related to release of gaseous hydrocarbons

Description: Total characterization data on gas contents, release kinetics, physical and chemical properties, mineralogy and lithology obtained on the C-1 well are reported. Total hydrocarbon gas contents accumulating in the free space surrounding the shale sample in the sealed canisters range from less than 10 to 90%. A positive correlation is observed between the gas contents and sample depth. Total carbon values vary between 0.4 and 7.2% with an average value of approximately 2.0% hydrogen values ranging… more
