Calculation of Average Flux in Moderator of Water Lattices by Means of a Relaxation Method

Description: The following report concerns the application of a relaxation mesh method for the determination of the average flux within the moderator of a light water moderated, 1.027 per cent U-235, hexagonal lattice with a volume ratio (V_H2O + V_Al)/V_Uranium of 4:1. It was hoped that the calculation would enable one to determine any differences in flux which might result from the fact that the unit cell is a hexagon instead of a cylinder. Because we were primarily interested in the effect due to geometr… more

Multi-Velocity Serber-Wilson Neutron Diffusion Calculations

Description: Certain types of neutron diffusion calculations were considerably simplified when the Serber.Wilson Method was introduced about eight years ago. This method, semi-empirical In nature and named after its co-discoverers, was first formulated for the one-velocity isotropic theory and applied to spherical geometries. Within these limits it has in general proved to be a fairly accurate method. If restricted source-free case it has, in addition, turned out to be quite manageable both analytically and… more

Use of the Characteristics of Permalloy in Detecting a Predetermined Value of Magnetic Field or Current in a Time-Varying Electromagnet: 1/4 Scale Bevatron Operating Model, Magnetic Field Strength-Magnet Current Correspondence

Description: In programming the sequence of events in the operational cycle of the bevatron, certain devices must be triggered at specific values of magnetic field strength in the gap. It is desirable that the time-jitter, which corresponds to field jitter, of the tirggering pulses be small. In the synchrotron this is done with peaking strips which are located in the fringing field of the gap.

The Maintenance of Animals Containing Radioactive Materials

Description: Abstract: In the Biology Division, the maintenance of animals containing radioactive materials posed many problems. In addition to routine care of the animals, protection had to be provided for the personnel who worked with the contaminated animals. Frequent air changed in the room in which the animals were caged were necessary: farm workers were required to wear masks; animal cages were checked regularly for radiation; acid was used on the sawdust in the excrete pens; and a new, more efficient… more

Performance test of a bladeless turbine for geothermal applications

Description: The Possell bladeless turbine was tested at the LLL Geothermal Test Facility to evaluate its potential for application in the total flow process. Test description and performance data are given for 3000, 3500, 4000, and 4500 rpm. The maximum engine efficiency observed was less than 7 percent. It is concluded that the Possell turbine is not a viable candidate machine for the conversion of geothermal fluids by the total flow process. (LBS)

CONCEPTS FOR CAPACITIVELY RF-SHIELDED BELLOWS IN CRYOGENIC STRUCTURES.

Description: Bellows are frequently required in accelerators and colliders. Usually RF-shields with spring fingers are employed to screen the bellows. The lack of accessibility in cryogenic systems can be a problem and asks for alternate solutions to eliminate possible overheating, sparking, etc that occurred in intensive beams. This note addresses an alternate kind of RF shield, which uses capacitive contact instead of mechanical contact. The analysis, as well as numerical example of a superconducting cavi… more

Ancient Glass Studies: Potential Archaeological Sites Relevant to Low-Activity Waste Disposal at Hanford

Description: In this document we identify several archaeological sites that may be of use in validating the ILAW performance assessment. Glasses that might be recovered at these sites would be recovered with the surrounding soil. This soil would be analyzed and the distribution of elements released from the glass to the soil would be mapped. Coincidence of the actual migration and the modeled migration would constitute a validation exercise of the current performance assessment model for the Hanford Site.

Mercury control in the RTF

Description: Engineering controls, described in this report, limit the amount of mercury and moisture introduced to the RTF (233-H). These controls include liquid nitrogen chilled gold traps for mercury and zeolite beds for moisture which are installed in-line. All gas transfers between 232-H or 236-H to 233-H will pass through these traps. Barring unforeseen catastrophic failure of the traps, no detectable amounts of mercury will be introduced via this route. However, a small amount of mercury (near detect… more

Treatment of FGD plant wastewater by enhancing microfiltration fluxes. Final report, September 1, 1992--December 31, 1993

Description: In coal-fired boilers, the wet limestone-gypsum based flue gas desulfurization (FGD) plants produce large volumes of wastewater containing dissolved salts and heavy metals. Before discharging these wastes to the environment, the heavy metals must be removed. One of the preferred methods for removal of heavy metals is by co-precipitation of hydroxides and sulfides of heavy metals, followed by coagulation and flocculation techniques. As a post-treatment of the resulting wastewater stream, crossfl… more

Gauge invariance and the electromagnetic current of composite pions

Description: The Global Color-symmetry Model of QCD is extended to deal with a background electromagnetic field, and the associated conserved current is identified for the finite size {bar q}q pion modes at tree level. A well-defined truncation issued that factorizes the bilocal pion field into a local field variable and a hadronic form factor having a ladder Bethe-Salpeter content. The associated pion charge form factor is formulated. These developments are used to provide an illustration of how an effecti… more
