Description: Technical paper issued by the Bureau of Standards over studies conducted on transmissions of ultra-violet energy through different colored glasses. As stated in the introduction, "in the present paper are given the transmissions for the visible and ultra-violet of a large number of glasses, mostly colored, which are not used primarily for eye protection, but which are useful for various other purposes" (p. 3). This paper includes illustrations, and photographs.

Effect of nozzle design on fuel spray and flame formation in a high-speed compression-ignition engine

Description: "Fuel was injected from different type of injection nozzles into the combustion chamber of the NACA combustion apparatus, operated as a compression-ignition engine. High speed motion pictures were taken of the fuel sprays and combustion. Single-orifice nozzles of 0.008, 0.020, and 0.040 inch diameter, and multiorifice nozzles having 2, 6, and 16 orifices were tested. Nozzles having impinging jets and slit orifices were also included" (p. 327).

Critical Amounts of Uranium Compounds

Description: The method of calculation of critical masses of oxides and fluorides of uranium is given. The geometry assumed is a sphere and the calculations hold only in the absence of hydrogenous materials. Calculations are carried out which are applicable to materials containing from 20 to 100% U235.

Description: Technical report: Measurements have been made on the equilibrium between Cu, Cu2+, U4+, and UO22+ in H2SO4 in an attempt to establish the value of the U4+ - UO22+ couple potential. The value of the formal potential for the U3+ - U4+ couple in 1N HCl at 0 degrees C was determined to be + 0.65 v.

Results of preliminary flight investigation of aerodynamic characteristics of the NACA two-stage supersonic research model RM-1 stabilized in roll at transonic and supersonic velocities

Strain-Gage Measurements of Buffeting Loads on a Jet-Powered Bomber Airplane

Description: Buffet boundaries, buffeting-load increments for the stabilizers and elevators, and buffeting bending-moment increments for the stabilizers and wings as measured in gradual maneuvers for a jet-powered bomber airplane are presented. Description: The cup assembly of the Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR) consists of blanket bricks, inner rings, and safety plug, all of natural uranium. A flight comparison of a submerged inlet and a scoop inlet at transonic speeds

Description: Report presenting flight tests conducted on two different inlet configurations, a submerged divergent-wall inlet and scoop inlet, to determine their characteristics when installed on a YF-93 airplane. Measurements were made of the pressure-recovery characteristics of the inlets and overall airplane drag for each configuration. Results regarding the induction-system efficiency, airplane drag, and a relative comparison of the inlet installations are provided.

Some Aspects of the Radial Stability in a Magnetic Mirror Machine

Description: Abstract: "The radial motion of an ion in an axially symmetric magnetic field is discussed. It is pointed out that particles of constant velocity have clearly defined upper limits to their radial motion. This is a result of the other constant of the motion, the canonical angular momentum. A Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Bomb Release at a Mach Number of 1.62

Description: Memorandum presenting a model bomb-release investigation conducted in the 9-inch supersonic tunnel at a Mach number of 1.62 to determine what first-order interference effects are involved in making releases at supersonic speeds and, in some cases, to ascertain what modifications might be made to obtain near-level drops. The results of these tests indicate that the interference effects of the fuselage or wing-pylon upon the bomb release are, in most cases, adverse.
