Characteristics of the NACA 23012 airfoil from tests in the full-scale and variable-density tunnels

Description: "This report gives the results of tests in the NACA full-scale and variable-density tunnels of a new wing section, the NACA 23012, which is one of the more promising of an extended series of related airfoils recently developed. The tests were made at several values of the Reynolds number between 1,000,000 and 8,000,000. The new airfoil develops a reasonably high maximum lift and a low profile drag, which results in an unusually high value of the speed-range index. In addition, the pitching-mome… more

Radioactivity of the Cooling Water

Description: The most important source of radioactivity at the exit manifold of the pile will be due to O19, formed by neutron absorption of O18. A recent measurement of Fermi and Weil permits to estimate that it will be safe to stay about 80 minutes daily close to the exit manifolds without any shield. Estimates are given for the radioactivities from other sources -- both in the neighborhood and farther away from the pile.

Radiometric Analysis of Thick Samples

Description: Introduction: Measurements of polonium content in solids are usually performed by dissolving the material and preparing a thin sample which can be measured with one of the available instruments. A measurement of the radiation emerging from the thick sample should be sufficient to evaluate the polonium content. For this reason a calculation has been performed and the results have been compared with those obtained by the thin sample method. Obviously this proposed method using thick samples would… more

Columbia River Temperature Survey at Hanford Engineer Works: Preliminary Report

Description: It was agreed during a meeting on July 10, 1945 that an investigation should be made by the Technical Department to determine how fast and in what fashion the temperature of the effluent water from the 100 Areas is dissipated in the columbia River. A preliminary report on this investigation is submitted herewith for review by interested parties.

The Uranium-Cobalt System

Description: Abstract: "A phase diagram for the uranium-cobalt system has been constructed, based on thermal, microscopic, X-ray and chemical data. The results indicate the existence of three compounds and two eutectics, one of which shows a lowering of the melting point of uranium by approximately 400 C."

Acute Exposure to Polonium. (Medical Study of Three Human Cases)

Description: Three individuals were inadvertently exposed to polonium. Activity determinations on the routine weekly urine samples submitted by the individuals revealed counts of 174, 734, and 2190 c/min/50 ml respectively. An investigation was immediately launched to determine the source of the exposure, since there was no report of a spill or accident involving active material. By the process of elimination, the time of exposure was narrowed down to a time when two of the individuals were engaged in the d… more

Comparative Deposition of Zr95 in a Reticulo Endothelial Tumor to Normal Tissue in a Human Patient

Description: A test dose of Zr{sup 95} was given to a female patient which had a metastatic reticula endothelial tumor at the distal portion of the left femur. A comparison of the deposition of Zr{sup 95} showed greater uptake 24 hours after administration than any of the normal tissues investigated.

Crystal structure of polonium and its decay products

Description: X-ray diffraction patterns have been obtained from a sample of elemental polonium over a period of more than four half-lives. This time study was made for the purpose of determining the effect of decay upon the lattice constants and crystal structure of the element.

The Metabolic Properties of the Fission Products and Actinide Elements

Description: An investigation of the assimilation, distribution, retention, an excretion of the fission products and actinide elements in the rat has been conducted at the Crocker Radiation Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, California. These studies were initiated October 15, 1942, and are continuing at the present time. An extensive survey has been made of the metabolism of twenty-two different radio elements in the rat.

Products of High-Energy Deuteron and Helium Ion Bombardments of Copper

Description: The identity and relative yields of about twenty of the radioisotopes produced by the bombardment of natural copper with 190 Mev deuterons and 380 Mev helium ions have been determined. Two previously unreported isotopes were detected: Zn{sup 62}, decaying by orbital electron capture with a 9.5-hour half-life, and Fe{sup 52}, decaying by positron emission with a 7.8-hour half-life.
