Interim report No.1, PT-105-403-P, installation and initial operation

Description: The effect of temperature on the properties of graphite is being determined by exposing samples to pile neutrons at controlled temperatures in the range 75 C to 225 C. The first series of samples were charged into the newly installed dry, water-cooled test channel at B pile on January 23, 1951. This report presents details of the charging operation and observations noted during the initial operation of the test.

Increased process water pressure to 105 buildings

Description: This document discusses increases in water pressure from the 190 Building process pumps which has been contemplated for a range of pressures up to 550 PSIG. The existing process pumps are dual units, consisting of a steam turbine driven primary pump operated: in series with an electric driven secondary pump. The secondary pumps installed in 100-B, D, F, and H Areas were designed for 400 PSIG working pressure, and were given factory hydrostatic tests of 600 PSIG. The 100-DR pumps were given fact… more

Metallurgy Division Quarterly Progress Report for Period Ending October 31, 1950

Description: Minor changes in materials and methods resulted in increased yields in the production of fuel elements for the Bulk Shielding Facility. Attempts to bond uranium to a mercury-- silver alloy resulted in bonds of insufficient strength. Thorium alloys containing 2 to 4% Nb. Cr. Mn, Ti, Zr, Be. Al, and Si were prepared. The alloys containing Be, Al. or Si were hard, brittle, and not cold-workable. The alloys containing the other elements were coldworkable in the as-cast condition. Impact testing of … more

Energy Distribution of Fast Neutron Beam

Description: Experimental techniques are described for the spectral measurement of a collimated fast-neutron beam. A H/sub 2-/ filled cloud chamber, proton-recording nuclear plates, and threshold fission foils were used as neutron detectors in the measurements. As an application of these techniques, the energy distribution and absolute flux of the fast neutron beam emerging from the Los Alamos fast reactor was measured from 0.1 to 18 Mev. (D.E.B.)
