HIGH-INTENSITY EFFECTS IN THE LONGITUDINAL MOTION OF STORED PARTICLE BEAMS

Description: A brief review is given of the various self-field phenomena associated with the longitudinal motion of particles in storage rings. Although there are some high-intensity phenomena for which the coupling of longitudinal and transverse motion is essential, such as, for example, the headtail effect; the great majority of high-intensity phenomena primarily involve either longitudinal or transverse degrees of freedom. In this review, we restrict our attention to phenomena which are essentially longi… more

The Marysville, Montana, Geothermal Project: Environmental Analysis of the Deep Geothermal Research Well

Description: The objective of this research project is to investigate a geothermal anomaly of high heat flow discovered in 1969 in central Montana, and to determine how this natural resource might be developed as a source of useful energy. Under Phase I, the natural resource will be explored, drilled, and modeled at an estimated cost of $2,588,935 over a 3-year period. Phase II, depending upon the nature of the heat source, will be developing the resource under a cooperative effort of government and private… more

Recommendations for Shape of Earthquake Response Spectra

Description: From summary: The major objectives of the studies described in this report were to analyse and evaluate a number of significant earthquake records and to utilize the results to develop "standardized" design spectrum shapes to be used in the seismic design of nuclear power plant facilities.

Biomedical engineering support. Quarterly progress report, October 15, 1972--February 15, 1973

Description: During the quarter covered (October 15, 1972 to February 15, 1973), additional models of the nuclear engine were implanted in calves to evaluate the chronic effects of weight and size. Further characterization of the bench test heart pump was performed, The effect of pump rate on cardiac output was evaluated. The effect of outflow (anterial) pressure on cardiac output was evaluated. Bjork- Shiley valves with stainless steel disks and pyrolitic carbon disks were tested and the effect of cardiac … more

Seismic effects on a proposed underground reactor facility

Description: A study was conducted to determine the seismic effects on the containment structure of a proposed underground reactor facility. Simplified and often inadequate building code equivalent static design procedures frequently used for conventional reactor systems are not adequate for partially buried or fully buried reactor systems. A sophisticated dynamic analysis which can consider soilstructure interaction effects resulting from both seismic displacements and forces must be employed. One such app… more

Contribution of radiation damage to the study of basic atomic motion in solids

Description: Radiation damage is a powerful tool for the study of point-defect interactions in solids. The large numbers of point defects produced during irradiation and subsequent annealing aggregate to form planar and linear defects. A study of the nature of these defects provides basic understanding of the mechanics of defect formation in solids. Defects in ion-bombarded silicon are studied using the transmission electron microscope. A mechanism for the formation of the observed defects is proposed. The … more

Evaluation of ex-reactor loading event on high-fluence EBR-II control-rod thimble 5E3

Description: A Type 304 stainless steel EBR-II control-rod thimble (CRT 5E3) with high fluence was damaged while undergoing dimensional evaluation. The damage, which occurred when the thimble was inadvertently loaded in a bending mode, consisted of rather localized but extensive fracture. An elastic stress analysis of the bending mode was done on the thimble, using semimembrane shell theory. The analysis disclosed several important aspects that the simpler and more commonly employed techniques do not disclo… more
