ANALOG SOLUTION OF A MODEL OF THE SOURCES OF ELUTRIATABLE FINES IN THE FLUIDIZED BED CLACINATION PROCESS

Description: A model is proposed which depicts the sources of elutriatable fines in the fluidized bed calcination process as being in two major groups, spray drying mechanisms and attrition mechanisms. Based on this model, equations are derived which express the rate of change of the concentration of a chemical tracer material in the elutriated fines, following introduction of the tracer into the feed and following its removal from the feed. This system has been simulated on an analog computer, and by match… more

ANALYSIS OF SNAP REACTOR COOLANT CROSS-FLOW IN THE SNAP-2 REACTOR EXCLUDING THE PERIPHERAL $sub 4$UNFED$sub 4$ CHANNEL

Description: The deviation from the expected coolant flow distribution within the SNAP 2 reactor is due to the filling and draining of the unfed'' peripheral flow channels. An analysis of the cross-flow in a simulated SNAP 2 model omitting the unfed'' peripheral channels was made. The results of this investigation are presented herein. (auth)

Asymptotic Solutions to Compound Decision Problems

Description: A compound decision problem is the simultaneous consideration of a large number of statistical decision of identical nature. The work of Hannan and Robins are extended to the derivation of optimal asymptotic procedures in the sense of regret risk convergence for a variety of compound decision problems. Convergence theorems are derived. (D.L.C.)

Axial flux data for fuel measurement

Description: A survey of the PITA-18 nonpoisonous spline program was conducted in conjunction with a study to determine the best method of eliminating the variability of axial flux on the fuel performance parameter, q. The results of this survey and the conclusions reached in the rupture coefficient study were found to be inter-dependent such that both are presented in this report. The data from the PITA-18 nonpoisonous spline program, as received, is the output of the NOLA-2 computer program. One quantity … more

AXIAL TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION IN EGCR. DEVELOPMENT OF THE PTD-1 PROGRAM

Description: The equations and procedures of the PTD-1 program for obtaining the surface temperature distribution, the gas bulk temperature, and the pressure distribution for any of the 234 channels in the EGCR are developed. The program, in FORTRAN for the IBM 7090, is designed for any arbitrary power distribution yielding a constant gas outiet temperature or a given maximum surface temperature and includes the effects of thermal radiation on surface and bulk gas temperatures. The flow sheet and some resul… more

Construction of a Sea-Level, Transisthmian Canal Using Nuclear Explosives

Description: Partial abstract: "This report is based: (1) on information developed in earlier high explosive experiments which determined the optimum spacing and burial depth of charges in a row to produce a channel uniformly wide and deep, and (2) on the Sedan and Danny Boy experiments, which provided data on dimensions of nuclear craters in both soil and basalt rock. This information has been combined with the 1947 route surveys of the Panama Canal company, and estimates have been made not only of the num… more

DATA SIMULATION WITH AN ON-LINE COMPUTER AS A DIAGNOSTIC AND ANALYTICAL TOOL

Description: A hybrid approach was adopted in the use of an on-line computer in setting up and analyzing nuclear physics experiments. In addition to the usually cited advantage of online flexibility and the ability to do off-line calculations, the general purpose computer can simulate data by preserting the results of off-line calculations to the experimenter in a format identical to that used for data display. As compared with off-line calculations at a computer center with subsequent hand or machine plott… more

Design and Fabrication of Fuel Rods Containing Sintered UO2 Extrusions - Assembly 11L

Description: The extrusion forming of ceramic powders may be economically interesting in the field of nuclear fuel fabrication. When applied to the forming of rod-type uranium dioxide fuel, extrusion processes have been able to produce cylindrical bodies with length-to-diameter ratios much greater than those of the conventional die-pressed pellets. Furthermore, after being sintered, the extrusions have exhibited densities at least as high as those of sintered pellets. Thus, extrusion forming may offer re… more
