Average Fission Cross Section U238 for Fission Neutrons

Description: By means of measurements with a double ionization chamber, the average fission cross section of U238 for neutrons from the fission of U235 was determined in terms of v, the average number of neutrons per fission of U235. the number of fission of U238 was measured in one of the ionization chambers while the number of fissions from the fission neutron source of U235 was measured in the other chamber. In the nine runs made to determine the cross section, a variety of different methods was used to … more

Collected Reports on Fission Cross Sections of U237 in Thermal Neutron, Intermediate Neutron, and Degraded Fission Neutron Spectra

Description: Part 1. The neutron fission cross section of U237 has been measured in a thermal neutron spectrum and in a somewhat degraded fission spectrum. The fission cross section for thermal neutrons is found to be <2 barns; the ratio of the fission cross section of U237 to that of U235 in the degraded fission spectrum is found to be 0.476 +- 15% which corresponds to [formula] in this spectrum equal to 0.66 +- 0.10 barns. Part 2. The average neutron fission cross section of U237 has been measured in a ne… more

Corrosion of Uranium in Moist Air

Description: The corrosion of uranium in moist air is more rapid than had been thought previously. Earlier recommendations were based on test of 300 hr duration. In tests which were conducted for over 1000 hr, moisture has less effect than in those tests made over shorter periods. The corrosion of uranium by dry and moist air has been studied at 38, 57, and 75 degrees C. Although moisture increases the rate of initial attack, after 200 to 500 hr the effect is reduced and an accelerating corrosion rate overs… more

Extraction of Americium Nitrate with Tributyl Phosphate

Description: The extraction of americium nitrate with tributyl phosphate has been investigated for aqueous solutions containing sodium nitrate and nitric acid. Americium nitrate is found in the organic phase as free molecules or ions and as the complex (Am(NO3)3. Aqueous solutions containing nitric acid introduce a competitive factor through the formation of the TBP-KNO3 complex in the solvent layer. In addition. americium nitrate is complexed in the aqueous phase by nitric acid.

Impact Extrusion of Uranium

Description: Uranium has been successfully impact extruded into typical cylindrical shapes of conventional design. Extrusion was carried out in the "gamma" region by heating cast uranium slugs to a temperature of approximately 1050 degrees C. Protection against oxidation was afforded by surrounding the slugs during heating with an inert atmosphere of argon gas. Impact extruded shapes possessed physical properties which are better than the properties of as-cast metal. Also, extruded shapes show a uniform int… more

The Injection Casting of Plutonium

Description: Plutonium metal can be injected into cold metal molds to form castings with thin walls. The operation is performed in a vacuum chamber, using an inert gas as the injecting medium. Sound pieces free of gas cavities can be made using either pure or delta-stabilized plutonium. This report describes the equipment and techniques used to cast a typical thin section piece in the form of a 6 in. diameter, 45' cone.

Methyl Methacrylate Casting Resin

Description: Abstract: "This report describes work done to improve the casting characteristics of methyl methacrylete resin under CMR-6-18 authorization. The experimental program was initiated with the objectives of decreasing casting time, bubble formation and shrinkage. It has been found that by use of a common solvent for monomer and polymer concentration in monomer can be attained greater than any previously reported in preparation of a methacrylate casting resign. Incorporation of this greater amount o… more

Neutron Emission Probabilities From the Interaction of 14-Mev Neutrons With Be, Ta, Bi, and U238

Description: The spatial and spectral distributions of the neutrons from 14-Mev neutron interactions with Ta, Bi, and U have been obtained using nuclear emulsion detectors in conjunction with a neutron collimator. The space-integrated neutron spectrum has been obtained for Be by means of a sphere experiment.

Preliminary Survey of Uranium Metal Exponential Columns

Description: Reflected cylindrical exponential columns of bare and natural uranium were constructed of stacked plates of oralloy (93.4%) and tuballoy. Average concentrations of U235 ranging from 0,72% to 9.18% were investigated. Flux distributions, buckling values, and spectral indices were obtained. The indicated U235 concentration for infinite critical mass is about 5.5%.

Preparation of Plutonium Sheet by Extrusion

Description: Plutonium sheet of uniform thickness and good surface can be made by the extrusion of a tube which is then split and flattened. This report describes the equipment and the operating conditions for making sheet 0.005 to 0.055 in. thick with areas up to 24 in. square.

Short Period Gamma-Rays from U235 Fission Products

Description: A search for gamma-ray activities with period 1-100 msec from thermal neutron fission of U235 gave negative results. 0.43 +- 0.03 sec was the shortest observed. The period of B12 was found to be 27 +- 3 msec. The cyclotron beam was pulsed to supply 1-10 msec neutron bursts. coincidence scintillation deters were employed.

A Spectrophotometric Determination of Multimicrogram Amounts of Plutonium

Description: A spectrophotometric method for the determination of plutonium wing sodium alizarin sulfonate has been developed. The red plutonium-alizarin sulfonate color is developed in solutions having a pH of about three in the presence of a formic acid-sodium formate buffer, and the resulting absorption is measured at 530 millimicrons. Most interfering cations, particularly iron(III), are removed from the plutonium solutions by means of electrolysis using a mercy cathode. Aluminum(III), in quantities up… more
