An Aerodynamic Raindrop Sorter. Technical Progress Report No. 1.

Description: A pilot model of an Aerodynamic Raindrop Sorter was constructed along the lines suggested by mathematical analysis. The function of the analyzer is to sort natural rain according to drop size and to collect the sorted drops for further analysis. The pilot model, a small wind tunnel inclined at 45 deg to the horizontal, demonstrated the feasibility of aerodynamic rain drop sorting over a wide range of drop sizes. (auth)

Alkyl Phosphoric Acids as Extraction Agents for Uranium

Description: The recent interest in tributyl phosphate as an extracting solvent for uranium indicated that consideration of n-butyl phosphoric acid for this application might be of interest if some way could be devised to overcome the manipulation and miscibility difficulties. It was found that if the material was placed in any one of a number of carrier solvents, it had a remarkably strong extractive effect on uranyl ion out of acid solutions without a salting agent present.

Analysis of Lid Tank Neutron Data for Lead and Iron

Description: Abstract: An analysis of the lid tank neutron data for Pb-H2O and Fe-H2O is made. "Effective" fast neutron cross sections for the metals are obtained. This is based on the "one collision theory" of shielding. Values are 3.4 barns for Pb and 2.0 barns for Fe. These compare very well with those obtained by Albert and Welton based on other lid tank data and another method of calculation.

Analysis of Spurious Modes in Magnet Power Supply

It is found that there are eleven resonant modes in addition to the desired mode of operation with six additional resonant frequencies. The Angular Dependence of Thermal Neutron Spectra in Lattices

Description: This technical report discusses techniques that have been developed for "computing the angular thermal flux spectrum emerging from a lattice. These methods are applied to water lattices and it is found that the computed spectra are sensitive to the geometrical description of the lattice, but insensitive to the anisotropic scattering by water. Description: From introduction: The Annie Laurie 'cranium Prospect, in the Oro Blanco district of southern Arizona, is located in the southwest quarter of Sect. 3, T233, R=13. The nearest United States post office is Nogales, about 25 miles east, and the nearest settlement is Ruby, a nearly abandoned mining camp about 3 miles north. Access to the Ruby area is by gravel road from US highway 39 at Kinsley or Nogales. The Ruby quadrangle (1940) includes the area surrounding the prospect.

The Application of Tracer Techniques to the Determination of Uranium Extraction Coefficients

Description: Abstract: This report deals with the development of a method using tracer technique for determining uranium extraction coefficients on solutions of low uranium concentration. It was found that extraction coefficients could be determined on systems containing as low as one part per million uranium using 1900 level uranium as the tracer. Results of several extraction series are presented in which aluminum nitrate is used as the salting agent and dibutyl carbitol the organic extractant.
