Pliocene Fossils From Limestone in Southern Florida

Description: Abstract: This paper describes the mollusks and echinoids found in limestone dredged from ditches along the Tamiami Trail in southern Florida, in the area mapped as "Lostmans River limestone (Quaternary)" by Sanford but included in the Pliocene Caloosahatchee formation by Cooke and Mossom on the evidence of these fossils as identified by Mansfield. The matrix of the fossils is unlike the typical Caloosahatchee formation, which is sandy, but the fauna is closely related to that of the upper part of the Caloosahatchee formation and is regarded as a facies of the Caloosahatchee. The fauna shows considerable resemblance to that of the Imperial formation of California but may not be contemporaneous with it.

Potash Salts from Texas-New Mexico Polyhalite Deposits: Commercial Possibilities, Proposed Technology, and Pertinent Salt-Solution Equilibria

Description: From Introduction: "Figure 1 shows the location of sources that have been either exploited or seriously considered at one time or another, super-imposed upon a map indicating by small letters the order of consumption of K2O in the leading States; the amount used in these States, together with the percentage of the total consumption of potash used as fertilizer in the United States in 1939, is given in table 1. Figure 2 shows the domestic production and total consumption of potassium salts, in terms of tons of K2O, with the value per unit at the plants, for each year since 1913. Considered together, these two figures tell a significant story."

Evaluation of Gust and Draft Velocities from Flights of P-61c Airplanes within Thunderstorms 2 - July 9, 1946 to July 11, 1946 at Orlando, Florida

Description: "The results obtained from an evaluation for gust and draft velocities of acceleration and airspeed-altitude records taken by NACA recording instruments installed in P-61c airplanes participating in thunderstorm flights 6, 7, and 8 of July 9, 1946, July 10, 1946, and July 11, 1946, respectively, are presented herein. These data are summarized in tables I and II. In accordance with a recent discussion with a member of the U.S. Weather Bureau staff, the tabulated results for the present flight include in addition to data of the type presented in reference 1, the initial heading of the airplane for each traverse, the pressure altitude at the start of each traverse in increments of 500 feet, and the gust gradient distance when it could be evaluated" (p. 1).

An Analysis of the Variation With Altitude of Effective Gust Velocity in Convective-Type Clouds

Description: From Introduction: "In the present paper, the variation of effective gust velocity in convective-type clouds with altitude is investigated. Data obtained during 1941 and 1942 at altitudes up to 34,000 feet and data obtained more recently from the Thunderstorm Project (reference 5) at altitudes up to 26,000 feet are utilized for this purpose. Consideration is given in analyzing the results both to data for the range

Uranium and Phosphate in the Western Part of the Bonny Lake Mine, Polk County, Florida

Description: From abstract: During the month of May 1950, the Davison Chemical Corporation, under contract with the Atomic Energy Commission, drilled 24 phosphate prospecting holes in the western part of the Bonny Lake mine, in the SW NW4 and the NW*SW4 sec. 32, T. 29 S., R. 24 E., Polk County, Fla. The purpose of this drilling was to obtain a comparison between tonnage and grade of uranium in the phosphate as indicated by prospecting, and the tonnage and grade of uranium in the phosphate products recovered in the mill. The results presented in this paper are based upon a study of drill cores, drill logs, gamma-ray logs, and the chemical analyses of drill-core samples.

Distribution and Origin of Phosphate in the Land-Pebble Phosphate District of Florida

Description: From abstract: The land-pebble phosphate district of Florida is a part of the Gulf Coastal Plain. The geologic formations cropping out in the district are the Miocene Hawthorn, Pliocene Bone Valley, and Pleistocene terrace sands. The Bone Valley formation consists of a lower strongly phosphatic unit and an upper less phosphatic unit. This paper is concerned principally with the lower unit, which contains the bulk of the minable phosphate deposits of the district.
