Chemistry of Pu(IV) Polymer

Description: Pu(IV) polymer may form in solutions containing as much as 0.3 M acid at room temperature. At higher temperatures polymer may be formed at even higher acidities. Dilution of plutonium solutions with water can result in polymer formation due to local dilution of the acid even when the final equilibrated solution would be stable. The polymer may be destroyed in acid solutions by oxidation or reduction of the plutonium or by use of complexing agents.

The Origin and Nature of Radioactive Wastes in the Atomic Energy Program

Description: There is great uncertainty in defining the nature of radioactive wastes from power reactor fuel reprocessing since it is not yet possible to say which processing methods will be used. For this reason several approaches to the problem and the wastes associated with each are described here.

Radiation Stability of Organic Liquids. Semi-Annual Report No. 3 for 1 January to 30 June 1958

Description: When most solvents are exposed to radiation, decomposition occurs. The decomposition products may adversely affect the solvent extraction of uranium, thorium, or plutonium in a variety of ways. The research described in this report extends previous studies. The main items of interest are: (1) the roles of "radiation polymer" and dibutyl phosphoric acid in the plant problems of uranium retention and emulsification; (2) the effect of nitric acid upon the extent of radiation damage; (3) the radiat… more

Mechanisms of Surface Adsorption in Homogeneous Reactor Loops.Final Report for January 1, 1957 to June 30, 1958

Description: The work during the past six months, using radioisotopes, is summarized in detail, and earlier results are included as pertinent. Most of the research was performed in rocking autoclaves, using a uranyl sulfate solution and oxygen overpressure at 250 to 300 deg C. The conditions were chosen to simulate homogeneous reactor test conditions without elaborate apparatus and in a reproducible manner. The suspended solids and the deposits on type 347 stainless steel and Zircaloy-2 specimens were analy… more

Time Variation of Thermodynamic Parameters of a Gas in the Region of a Shock Front : Progress Report III

Description: The original goal of this investigation was to compare the thermodynamic characteristics of the gases in and behind the shock fronts in gases at initial pressures in the millimeter range and to compare these characteristics in the geometries of single and double discharges. The shock fronts were not visible, so it was not possible, at these pressures, to get visual data from the shock front itself. The parameters giving the properties of the gases were faces. Measurements made with an image con… more

Determination of Flux Levels in Neutron Detector Wells. Section II. First Performance. Core I, Seed 1. Test Results DL-S-242, T-641311

Description: The purpose of the test was to determine the neutron flux level in a BF3 counter well during the second performance of DL-S-225. The measured activity of the irradiation brass bolt was due entirely to the radioactive decay of Zn65. The thermal neutron flux in the BF3 counter well during the second 1000 hour run was calculated to be 2.5 x 10(9) neutrons/cm2 sec.
