Graphite Combustion Hazard in the EGCR

Description: Factors influencing the possibility of a fire resulting from admission of air to the core of a high-temperature, graphite-moderated, inert gas cooled reactor are considered. Approximate calculations indicate that under several possible conditions of coolant system failure with admission of air to the core, a graphite fire could result.More accurate methods of calculation are outlined in an Appendix. Confirming experimental studies and possible methods of fighting an existing fire are proposed.
