PAR Loop Schedule Review

Description: The schedule for the installation of the PAR slurry loop experiment in the South Facility of the ORR has been reviewed and revised. The design, fabrication, and installation is approximately two weeks behind schedule at this time due to many factors; however, indications are that this time can be made up. Design is estimated to be 56 per cent complete, fabrication 27 per cent complete-and installation 11 per cent complete:

Aircraft Power-Plant Instruments

Description: From Summary: "The report includes a description of the commonly used types and some others, the underlying principle utilized in the design, and some design data. The inherent errors of the instrument, the methods of making laboratory tests, descriptions of the test apparatus, and data in considerable detail in the performance of commonly used instruments are presented. Standard instruments and, in cases where it appears to be of interest, those used as secondary standards are described."

Wing pressure distribution and rotor-blade motion of an autogiro as determined in flight

Description: From Summary: "This report presents the results of tests in which the pressure distribution over the fixed wing of an autogiro was determined in both steady and accelerated flight. In the steady-flight condition, the rotor-blade motion was also measured. These data show that in steady flight the rotor speed as a function of the air speed is largely affected by the variation of the division of load between the rotor and the wing; as the load on the wing increases, the rotor speed decreases."

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of an N.A.C.A. 23012 Airfoil with a Slotted Flap and Three Types of Auxiliary Flap

Description: An investigation was made in the N.A.C.A. 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel to determine the aerodynamic section characteristics of an N.A.C.A. 23012 airfoil with a single main slotted flap equipped successively with auxiliary flaps of the plain, split, and slotted types. A test installation was used in which an airfoil of 7-foot span was mounted vertically between the upper and the lower sides of the closed test section so that two-dimensional flow was approximated" (p. 699).

H.E.W. - 300 Area - Metal turnings - Fire hazard

Description: This memorandum discusses means to extinguish magnesium fires in metal turnings at the Hanford Engineer Works 300 Area. The storage of metal turnings in 55 gallon drums presented a fire hazard, for which an effective means for extinguishing the fire had not been presented. This memorandum is dated July 1943. (JL)

Distribution Coefficient of Dâ‚‚O Between Triethylamine and Water

Description: Summary: "Water containing 1.8% D2O was distributed between the two liquid phases formed with triethylamine at 20 and 35 C. The triethylamine was removed from each phase by aseotropic distillation with benzene before analyzing the water by determining its density with a quartz float. The ratios of the concentrations of the D2O in the water layer to that in the amino layer were 1.007 and 1.004 at 20 and 35, respectfully. The differences from unity are about the same as the errors of analysis."

Experiments on the Evaporation of Boron in Vacuo : Progress Report No. 1 on a Phase of Problem No. 132 - ML - 56-3; File Serial 13

Description: It was desired to determine a method of evaporating boron to form a rather pure uniform tenacious coat of specified thickness. These coats are needed as monitoring films for neutron intensities, particularly in steel ionization cylinders. The most satisfactory method of evaporating boron employed a graphite filament. A mixture of amorphous boron and Carbenoid A was painted onto the filament which was then heated by electrical resistance method to 2300 degree C at which temperature the boron eva… more

Resonance Absorption of Uranium in Mixtures

Description: A good determination of the resonance absorption of uranium when admixed with various substances is necessary so that calculations can be made on the efficiency of homogeneous piles. The original experiments along these lines were undertaken by Creutz, Jupnik, and Snyder (C-116) and consisted of experiments on the resonance capture in pure U, UO2, U3O8, and one experiment on capture in a mixture of U3O8 and graphite. These experiments were done at the cyclotron in Princeton and consisted of det… more

Classified information required by operators and others exposed to radiation hazards

Description: Information required by operators exposed to radiation hazards is discussed. All areas of the plant are subjected to radiation hazards similar to those in the radium industry. Personnel in these areas are required to wear pencil meters and special badges that are evidently not solely for identification. They are required to submit to medical examinations more stringent and frequent than usual. They are required to wear heavy gloves in one location, thin gloves in another, disposable hats or rub… more

Corrosion of Tuballoy-Molybdenum Alloys by Water

Description: The primary purpose of the corrosion work was to find a tuballoy alloy which would be sufficiently corrosion resistant to be useful for canned slugs even if some of the can were to leak. The secondary purpose was to obtain general corrosion data on tuballoy alloys.
