FUEL ELEMENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR THE PEBBLE BED REACTOR. Final Report

Description: >The basic fuel element consisted of a uniform dispersion of fuel in a 1 1/2 inch diameter graphite sphere. Ceramic coatings for the retention of fission products were studied. It was found-that molecularly deposited'' ceramics such as alumina, siliconized silicon carbide, and pyrolytic carbon were excellent barriers to fission product leakage. The most advantageous location for ceramic coatings was found to be on the individual fuel particles, where the coating was subject to smaller forces an… more

Magnetic Properties of Insulators : Quarterly Report No. 2 Covering the Period from May 15, 1961 to August 15, 1961

Description: Abstract: "The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of color centers in additively colored KCl crystals is measured to observe the effects of optical bleaching at room temperature. Earlier measurements on the F-center are confirmed and the susceptibility is measured at 78 and 300 deg K over five decades of power, including the very low power region. The width and the saturation properties of the individual multiplets are studied in detail and the technique of making EPR measurements on inhomog… more

Delayed Failure Hydrogen Embrittlement of Zirconium: Quarterly Report Number 2, December 1961 - March 1962

Description: Abstract: "The purpose of this investigation is to determine the extent to which zirconium and zirconium alloys exhibit delayed failure (static fatigue) as caused by a combination of absorbed hydrogen and applied stress. Both notched and unnotched specimens of unalloyed zirconium and Zircaloy-2 have been hydrogenated to 200 ppm by means of a modified Sieverts apparatus; specimens were evaluated at room temperature. Thus far, no time-dependent fracture has been observed which can be attributed t… more

WSEP 30-ton liquid transfer cask: Design criteria and performance tests

Description: Shipment of radioactive wastes in shielded transfer casks is a continuing practice between the 300 Area and the 200 Areas. However, the Waste Solidification Engineering Prototypes (WSEP) located in 324 Building, 300 Area, require the transfer of significant quantities of radioactive wastes. Two new 30-ton casks are being placed in service to accommodate the increased number of shipments. The purpose of this report is to document the design criteria, tests and calculations performed on the casks… more

Production test IP-665-A, evaluation of hot-die-sized end bonding processes

Description: Investigations of possible operational limitations of the ALSi bonded e elements and the need for a replacement or alternate fuel fabrication process have been lender way for several years. Recently, one fuel manufacturing process, hot-die-sized diffusion bonding, has been intensely examined and irradiation testing of this new fuel type began in 1963. This production test is one additional step in evaluating the new fuel fabrication process. The objective of this test is to evaluate the effect … more

Progress in reactor water plant operation, FY 1958--FY 1962

Description: The water plants and associated steam back-up facilities which supply coolant to Hanford`s eight production reactors are large and vital facilities. Their reliability is essential to the safety and continuity of reactor operation. Their output and efficiency are important to reactor productivity and to the unit cost of plutonium and other irradiation products. In the fiscal year just ended, the cost of operating the reactor water and steam plants was $16,000,000, which represented a major fract… more
