Deuterium absorption and material phase characteristics of Zr[sub 2]Fe

Description: Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of polished surfaces, electron probe microanalysis, and X-ray powder diffractometry indicated the presence of a continuous Zr[sub 2]Fe phase with secondary phases of ZrFe[sub 2], Zr[sub 5]FeSn, [alpha]-Zr, and Zr[sub 6]Fe[sub 3]O. A statistically-designed experiment to determine the effects of temperature, time, and vacuum quality On activation of St 198 revealed that when activated at low temperature (350[degrees]C) deuterium absorption rate was slower… more

The Hall-Petch relationship and mechanisms of fracture in B2 compounds. Third year progress report

Description: A study was initiated in 1987 to examine structure and properties of grain boundaries in the B2 ordered alloys FeAl and NiAl. This project continued from 1990, with initial emphasis on CoAl, FeCo, and CuZn, but with continued work on FeAl and NiAl. Effect of alloy composition on structure/chemistry and properties of grain boundaries were examined by measuring yield strength vs grain size, measuring grain boundary composition using a scanning Auger electron microprobe, examining dislocation/grai… more

Chaotic dynamics in accelerator physics. [Dept. of Astrophysical, Planetary, and Atmospheric Sciences, Univ. of Colorado, Boulder]

Description: Substantial progress was in several areas of accelerator dynamics. For developing understanding of longitudinal adiabatic dynamics, and for creating efficiency enhancements of recirculating free-electron lasers, was substantially completed. A computer code for analyzing the critical KAM tori that bound the dynamic aperture in circular machines was developed. Studies of modes that arise due to the interaction of coating beams with a narrow-spectrum impedance have begun. During this research educ… more

Controlled Synthesis of Polyenes by Catalytic Methods. Progress Report for the period December 1, 1989 - November 30, 1992

Description: A more direct approach to polyenes by the direct polymerization of acetylenes has been achieved. We were able to show that polymerization of acetylene itself can be controlled with a well- characterized alkylidene catalyst, but only if a base such as quinuclidine is present in order to slow down the rate of propagation relative to initiation. (Quinuclidine may also stabilize vinylalkylidene intermediates formed in the reaction). Unfortunately, living polyenes'' were no more stable than isolated… more

Design of a high activity and selectivity alcohol catalyst

Description: Efforts to synthesize bimetallic cluster-derived Rh-Mo catalysts for CO and CO[sub 2] hydrogenation to preferentially produce oxygenates. The rhodium-molybdenum cluster, (PPh[sub 3])[sub 2]RhMO(CO)([mu]-CO)[sub 2]Cp, was employed as a precursor to alumina- and silica-supported catalysts which were in CO hydrogenation. When compared to catalysts made from the distinct organometallic complexes, RhH(CO)(PPh[sub 3])[sub 3] and [MO(CO)[sub 3]Cp][sub 2], the catalysts derived from a binuclear precurs… more

Mechanism of hydrodenitrogenation

Description: In this project it was proposed that the selectivity of the HDN reaction can be affected by an alteration of the catalyst acidity since it is possible that an acidic Hofmann-like deamination C--N--C bonds. Such a possibility was verified in this work by studying the denitrogenation of piperidine over acidic catalysts, and it was demonstrated that Bronsted acid sites are active for the denitrogenation of N-heterocycles, whereas Lewis sites are not. To better understand the role of acidic sites i… more

Permeability Changes in Coal Resulting From Gas Desorption

Description: This report documents studies on the effects of gas sorption on coal, with the intent of eventually evaluating how sorption and strain affect permeability. These studies were, carried out at the University of Alabama during the period from 1989 through 1992. Two major experimental methods were developed and used. In the strain experiments, electronic strain gauges were attached to polished blocks of coal in order to measure linear and volumetric swelling due to gas sorption. The effects of bedd… more

Alternative washing strategy during in-tank precipitation processing

Description: If late washing of precipitate is available, it is possible to modify the normal washing phase of the ITP process so that tank corrosion is prevented by inhibiting with sodium hydroxide rather than sodium nitrite. Hydroxide inhibition has numerous advantages to a hydroxide/nitrite flowsheet.1 However, the rate of hydroxide depletion due to radiolysis and C0[sub 2] absorption were uncertainties. Based on recent experiments and calculations: hydroxide consumption by radiolysis will be 0.01 molar … more

Development of biological coal gasification (MicGAS process). Nineth quarterly report, [July--September 1992]

Description: Laboratory scale studies examining biogasification of Texas lignite at various coal solids loadings have been completed. Bench scale bioreactors are currently being used to scale up the biogasification process to higher coal solids loadings (5% and 10%) Specific observations reported this quarter are that methane production was not curtailed when B-vitamin solution was not added to the biogasification medium and that aeration of Mic-1 did not sufficiently oxidize the medium to eliminate strict … more

Description: The Savannah River Site (SRS), operates a number of sites for the land disposal of various leachable radionuclide, organic, and inorganic wastes. Located within the General Separations Area (GSA) of SRS are the Low Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility (LLRWDF) and the Old Burial Ground (OBG). A portion of the LLRWDF has been designated as the Mixed Waste Management Facility (MWMF). The OBG began receiving waste in 1952 and was closed in 1974. Various wastes, including transuranic, intermed… more
