Organic Reactor Coolant Studies

Description: An experimental program was carried out to study (1) the mechanisms of fouling film formation in terphenyl coolants, (2) the corrosion of metals by the coolant, and (3) the pyrolytic and radiolytic stability of condensed ring polyaromatic compounds. This work was done in support of the Organic Cooled Reactor program and was terminated prior to its completion. No fouling film deposits, or only barely detectable traces of alpha Fe, were found by x-ray diffraction measurements of type 304 SS heate… more

Single Particle Excitation Theory Of The Photonuclear Giant Resonance

Description: Calculations of the photonuclear giant resonance according to the Wilkinson model are presented in this report. In this model the giant resonance in the cross section for absorption of gamma rays by nuclei is ascribed to the excitation of large numbers of nucleons in closed shells. The model generally predicts correctly the integrated cross section for the giant resonance, bu the resonance energy is too low. Results are presented in a series of tables and formulas so that the integrated cross s… more

Production test IP-603-I evaluation of accidental fuel flushing potential D-DR reactors

Description: This purpose of this test is to acquire data to support further studies aimed at determining whether a normal column of I&E enriched fuel elements or a normal column of natural fuel elements can be flushed from a process tube with the crossheader valved down to shutdown position if the front riser pressure is raised to normal operation pressure.

Fabrication process test: FPT-63-28, Reduction of in-process inventory

Description: This document details the process of casting plutonium for the purpose of reducing the in-process inventory. The plutonium is cast, then rough machined to produce a storable form, then stored for the ten-day waiting period.

Fabrication and Properties of Hot-Pressed Uranium Mononitride

Description: Dense UN specimens for property tests were fabricated primarily by an isostatic hot-pressing technique in which consolidated powder sealed in a refractory metal container was subjected to a 10,000-psi external gas pressure at 1480 to 1540 deg C for 3 to 4 hr. The thermal conductivity of uranium mononitride increased from 0.04 cal/(cm)(sec)( deg C) at 200 deg C to 0.06 cal/ (sec)(cm/sup 2/)( deg C) at 1000 deg C, which by an integrated thermal- conductivity criterion, makes it some eight times m… more

A Program of Basic Research on Mechanical Properties of Reactor Materials. Quarterly Progress Report for the Period Ending June 30, 1963

Description: Deformation Mechanisms in BCC Metals. Thin-film microscopic observations are presented for rolled single TA crystals. These observations show numerous areas almost devoid of slip markings. One specimen was annealed in air at 400 deg C to pin all the dislocations; transmission micrography of the annealed specimen indicates a quite low temperature for dialocation rearrangements. A correlation was found between the temperatures of the stages in the amplitude-dependent modulus defect and the deform… more

Aerospace Safety Re-Entry Analytical and Experimental Program, SNAP 2 and 10A (Interim Report)

Description: Before a reactor is launched into a satellite orbit about the Earth, the hazards to the population must necessarily be considered in the event that the reactor re-enters the Earth' s atmosphere and possibly impacts with the ground. Analytical and experimental efforts for calculating these potential hazards as they apply to SNAP-2 and -10A are described. (auth)

CASPER: A Generalized Program for Plotting and Scaling Data

Description: A Fortran subroutine was written to scale floating-point data and generate a magnetic tape to plot it on the Calcomp 570 digital plotter. The routine permits a great deal of flexibility, and may be used with any type of FORTRAN or FAP calling program. A simple calling program was also written to permit the user to read in data from cards and plot it without any additional programming. Both the Fortran and binary decks are available. (auth)

SURVEY OF METEOROID PROPERTY AND DISTRIBUTION DATA RELEVANT TO SNAP 8 REACTOR AND SHIELD DESIGN

Description: A survey of existing literature relative to the properties and distributions of meteoroids is presented. Of major interest is prediction of the criteria which may be used to calculate the imparing effect of this meteoroidal phenomenon on the SNAP 8 space system and/or its components and other space vehicle structures. Phase I Mechanical and Thermochemical Test Series. SNAP Aerospace Safety Program

Description: A description is given of the test series conducted in conjunction with the SNAP Aerospace Safety Program. The principal objective of the tests was to obtain data and information for evaluating the hazards occurring before, during, and after the flight of the SNAP 10A reactor. The results of these tests will provide a means for developing criteria to guide in the design of inherently safe SNAP systems. (auth)

A Perturbation Method for Solving the Angle Dependent Nucleon-Meson Cascade Equations

Description: A method is described for obtaining an approximate solution to the equations describing a nucleon-meson cascade by using the angular dependence of the secondary particle production kernels as a perturbation. The usefulness of the method lies in the fact that in a slab geometry the equations that must be solved numerically are essentially the same as those that are used in the straight-ahead approximation and have been solved previously. Pathfinder Atomic Power Plant. End Closure Development for Low Enrichment Superheater Fuel Rods

Description: Research on a welding process for closing the ends of pathfinder fuel elements is reported. Optimum parameters for certain variables (amperage, weld travel, preheat, etc.) affecting weld quality were determined, and two modified end cap designs were investigated and found to reduce weld sensitivity to certain variables. Use of chills on the fuel tube greatly improved weld puddie geometry and microstructure. Optimum weld parameters for rods containing UO/sub 2/ fuel were experimentally establish… more
