Preliminary Studies of Scavenging Systems Related to Radioactive Fallout : Summary Report, April 1, 1958 to March 31, 1959

Description: This report is the final in a series of preliminary reports that follow the studies of scavenging systems related to radioactive fallout. The project consisted of two phases: preliminary experiments to relate the sizes of particles in air to specific radioisotopes, and preliminary laboratory studies of scavenging of particles by liquid drops, including studies of sticking probability and effects of Brownian motion and water vapor diffusion.

Determination of Oxygen in Sodium

Description: Abstract: "A method has been developed for the determination of sodium monoxide in sodium which depends upon the reaction between sodium and n-butyl bromide in hexane solution. The sodium monoxide does not react with the reagent and can be determined, after the addition of water, by titration. The method is comparatively rapid, requires only the simplest of equipment, and it has the advantage that both oxygen and other impurities can be determined on the same sample."

The Machinability of Beryllium

Description: The following report investigates the isolation of the cause of the unusual tool-wear rates found in machining beryllium as attributed to an inherent characteristic of beryllium, or an effect of inclusions in beryllium, as well as the evaluation of the comparative machinability of the various types of beryllium.

Boiling Potassium Heat Transfer Project Loop Design and Development

Description: This technical report reviews the general purposes and immediate goals of the Heat Transfer Group at BNL's study of the heat transfer characteristics of alkali metals with phase change in forced convective flow. This report also presents a brief description of the design and development of the test loop. Figures detailing findings accompany the report.

Slug Manipulator

Description: A manipulator designed to support an irradiated slug at the bottom of the viewing basin, so that an operator could view it through a binocular telescope and be able to see all surfaces, was designed. Hydraulic power, using water, operates the manipulator and gears.

Linearized Three Component Magneto-Hydrodynamics

Description: "A linearized three component MHD theory is given. The three components are two oppositely charged species and a neutral species. Linearized macroscopic equations are presented which in the limit of vanishing magnet field reduce to fluid dynamical equations, and in the limit of vanishing neutral components is frictional. In addition the sound speed that enters is a function of three equilibrium densities. These equations yield a dispersion relation which is tenth order in the wave speed. The d… more

Quarterly Progress Report on Reactor Development 400 Program

Description: Physics calculations have been made for various combinations of the four types of fuel assemblies to be used in the EBWR core. Two thicknesses of plates, 0.205 in. and 0.274 in., including the two 0.020-in. cladding layers, are to be made of both natural U and U containing 1.44% U235. A total of 148 assemblies, 74 natural and 74 enriched, are to be fabricated with six identical plates each. Various configurations of these fuel assemblies will be used to (1) change the critical size of the core,… more

Second and Third Operating Test of HRT Core Vessel Transition Joint and Expansion Bellows Mockup

Description: Second and third tests were conducted on an expansion bellows and Zircaloy-stainless steel transition joint assembly, duplicating that used in the core-pressure vessel assembly of the HRT. The assembly was exposed for 1140 hours in the second test and and 167 hours in the third to a solution containing 0.04m UO2SO4, 0.02m H2SO4, and 0.005m CuSO4 in a 100A dynamic corrosion loop under conditions simulating reactor startup, shutdown, and steady-state operation. Results indicated that the transiti… more

Quarterly Report of the Solution Corrosion Group for the Period Ending April 30, 1957

Description: A third test of the mockup of the Zircaloy - stainless steel transition joint as used in the HRT reactor vessel was completed. No additional mechanical deflections of the bellows were made, but 12 additional thermal cycles of the unit were carried out. . The joint and bellows functioned properly and were leak-tight. Corrosion of stainless steel in 0.04 m UO2SO4 containing equimolar beryllium sulfate was not greater at 10-15 fps and much less at 15-75 fps, than in HRT solution at 200 and 225 C. … more
