Summary of the Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, and Mineralogy of Pennsylvanian and Permian Rocks of Oklahoma in Relation to Uranium-Resource Potential

Description: Report describes the structural and stratigraphic framework, depositional environment, and petrology and petrography of the various Pennsylvanian-Permian time and rock units present in Oklahoma. This report identifies five geologic settings favorable for the localization of uranium, such as alluvial fan deposits, oil-productive structures where Permian sandstones are altered, tidal-flat sandstone-silstones, channel sandstones on gentle structural features, and oil-productive Cherokee sandstones.

Outgassing Tests of Uranium Slugs

Description: During the canning of slugs for Production Test 313-105-3-M, a high number of rejects were caused by gas voids in the A1-S1 bonding layer. Since the heat treatment of the slugs in a molten salt bath resulted in a chemically altered surface, an investigation was made to determine the volume of gas evolved from salt-bath heat-treated slugs as compared to other types of slugs. This test was designed as a preliminary test to determine if there were a significant differences.

Alkyl Phosphoric Acids as Extraction Agents for Uranium

Description: The recent interest in tributyl phosphate as an extracting solvent for uranium indicated that consideration of n-butyl phosphoric acid for this application might be of interest if some way could be devised to overcome the manipulation and miscibility difficulties. It was found that if the material was placed in any one of a number of carrier solvents, it had a remarkably strong extractive effect on uranyl ion out of acid solutions without a salting agent present.

The Preparation and Properties of Distilled Yttrium

Description: From abstract: "Distillation procedures used for purifying yttrium metal, producing metal containing less than 150 ppm oxygen and lower concentrations of most of the other common impurities, are discussed. Some of the physical and mechanical properties of the distilled yttrium indicate: (1) a melting point of 1510°C, (2) a solid state transformation at 1459°C obtained from high temperature resistivity data, (3) a Rockwell H hardness of 60 and (4) improved rolling and swagging characteristics."

Electrolytic Reduction of Uranyl Ion

Description: From introduction: "Due to the hydrogen overvoltage at the surface of a mercury cathode, uranium solutions is hydrochloric acid may be reduced not only to the tetravalent state, but until considerable trivalent uranium is formed. Other metallic ions act as oxidation-reduction catalysts as well as being reduced themselves. The following paper is a study of the various reactions taking place in solution and at the surface of the cathode."

Thorium-Molybdenum Phase Diagram

Description: From abstract: "The phase diagram of the thorium-molybdenum alloy system has been determined to be the eutectic type with a eutectoid reaction associated with the thorium alpha-beta transformation. X-ray, thermal, electrical resistance and metallographic methods have established the eutectic point at 1380 ± 10°C and 7.0 ± 0.5 wt % molybdenum. A eutectoid reaction is proposed at 1358 ± 5°C and less than 0.1 wt % molybdenum. No solubility of thorium in molybdenum was detected at 1325°C."

Discriminator Calibrator

Description: To calibrate a pulse height discriminator, the amplitude of the calibrating pulse must be known. If the amplitude is known, the discriminator dial may be calibrated in terms of the input signal required to just trip it. This is the purpose for which the Discriminator Calibrator was designed. It produces pulses of variable but known amplitude with a rep. rate variable from 3 pps to 4000 pps. The main use of this unit at the UCRL is in conjunction with scalers at fixed counting locations.

Drift Tube Model Magnet Report

Description: Early in the design of the Mark I accelerator it was decided to install magnetic lenses in the drift tubes. A number of model magnets were constructed and tested to determine the best design for these lenses. This report includes only the results of the tests on the final models of the magnets that are designed for Mark I.

Interim Report of Nuclear Analysis Performed on SM-2 Core and Vessel : September 1, 1958 to December 31, 1959.

Description: Abstract: This technical report contains a description of the nuclear analysis performed upon the SM-2 core and vessel for the period September 1, 1958 to December 31, 1959. Calculations are given for core reactivity, power distributions, lifetime, reactor control, kinetics, radiation problems, fuel and poison burn-ups, and the nuclear effects of poisons, temperature, and geometry. Wherever possible, experimental data is included in order to test the validity of the analytical models. The SM-2 nuclear analysis was performed by Alco Products, in. under Tasks 1, 8, and 10 of Contract No. AT(30-2)-326 for the Atomic Energy Commission.

The Effect of Fluoride on the Corrosion of Stainless Steel in the Presence of Excess Al+3 Ion

Description: Technical report detailing corrosion tests of Type 347 stainless steel for two weeks in boiling uranyl nitrate, sulfuric acid media, with and without additions of Al+3 and F-1 in a 2:1 mole ratio. The results of these tests show that although the presence of aluminum greatly reduces the deleterious effect of fluoride, the corrosion rates are still three to four times greater than when no fluoride is present.
