The Effects of Ternary Alloying Additions on the Corrosion Resistance of Epsilon-Phase Uranium-Zirconium Alloys

Description: Abstract: "The corrosion rate in 680 F water of the uranium-50 w/o zirconium binary alloy was found to be -0.20 mg/(cm2)(hr), and that of the uranium-40 w/o zirconium binary alloy was -0.34 mg/(cm2)(hr). Both alloys correlated uniformly, with no evidence of discontinuous failure. Normal variations in interstitial content in either alloy had no significant effect on corrosion behavior. Tantalum additions, in the range of 0.2 to 5 w/o, improved the corrosion rate of the uranium-50 w/o zirconium b… more

Thermal Distortion of SAR Hafnium Control Rod

Description: Abstract: The thermal distortion of a Y-shaped hafnium control rod heated by arrays of individually controlled radiation heaters was studied. The large axial and radial temperature gradients specified for this control rod were easily obtained with the radiation-heating method. The distortion, as measured with dial indicators, amounted to a 2-mil movement of the free end of the rod in the direction of the coolest blade.

Analysis of turbojet and ram-jet engine cycles using various fuels

Description: From Introduction: "These data have been collected for presentation in this report to illustrate the performance of turbojet and ram-jet cycles utilizing several of the more promising high-energy fuels. Results are presented in terms of engine over-all efficiency and thrust per pound of airflow as functions of flight Mach number."

200 Area waste storage study

Description: As a part of the five year budget study requested by HOO-AEC, a study of separations waste storage requirements for this period was made. This study took into consideration the variant estimates of amount of irradiated uranium to be processed, and the goals in the waste reduction research and development program. The conclusions of this study were at variance, to some extent, with prior studies. Interest has been expressed in publication of this study to permit independent assessment of its bas… more

Occluded-Gas Ion Source

Description: "Characteristics of a pulsed, occluded-gas ion source, operating in a magnetic field, have been investigated. Mass spectra of hydrogen- and deuterium-loaded sources are presented. Constructional details of the source and its operating characteristics are discussed."

Antiproton Interaction Cross Sections

Description: Using the 1.19-Bev/c antiproton beam recently discovered at the Berkeley Bevatron of the University of California, we have measured the attenuation cross section in beryllium and copper. These cross sections are compared to attenuation measurements made with the same geometry using positive protons of the same incident energy (497 MeV).

Production test 200-2 processing of special irradiated plutonium. Final report

Description: One of the specifications for the final plutonium product is a maximum neutron emissivity (neutrons per gram-second). The major source of neutrons in plutonium is the spontaneous fission of the 240 isotopes. The concentration of the 240 isotope is a function principally of the total pile exposure and, to a lesser extent of pile operating parameters; in particular, the moderator temperature. The objectives of this production test were: to establish with greater accuracy and precision, empirical … more

The isolation and packaging of fission products at Hanford

Description: Research and development work on the removal of specific fission products from aqueous wastes has been in progress at the Hanford Atomic Products operation for several years. Initially, the primary incentive lay in the safe and economic disposal of these wastes. Scavenging techniques were developed which permitted the precipitation of the long-lived and biologically hazardous fission products cesium and strontium and the subsequent discharge of the supernates to the soil. Recently, interest has… more

Tabulated pressure data for several flap-type trailing edge controls on a trapezoidal wing at Mach numbers of 1.61 and 2.01

Description: Report presenting an investigation at two Mach numbers for a range of Reynolds numbers to determine the pressure distributions at several spanwise stations for a series of 25.4-percent-chord trailing-edge controls on a trapezoidal wing with a 23 degree sweptback leading edge, aspect ratio of 3.1, and taper ratio of 0.4. The report contains the tabulated pressure data for the complete range of test variables.

Presentation on Facility Problems in High-Temperature Structures Research

Description: "This presentation is intended to reflect the current general approach of the NACA to the problems of high-temperature structures research facilities. The facilities and problems discussed apply to flight in the Mach number range from 2 to about 20. It is emphasized that this field is one in which the thinking is rapidly changing and the facilities investigations discussed, particularly for the higher temperature range, are in the exploratory stage" (p. 1).
