Pion correlations as a function of atomic mass in heavy ion collisions

Description: The method of two pion interferometry was used to obtain source-size and lifetime parameters for the pions produced in heavy ion collisions. The systems used were 1.70 {center dot} A GeV {sup 56}Fe + Fe, 1.82 {center dot} A GeV {sup 40}Ar + KCl and 1.54 {center dot} A GeV {sup 93}Nb + Nb, allowing for a search for dependences on the atomic number. Two acceptances (centered, in the lab., at {approximately} 0{degrees} and 45{degrees}) were used for each system, allowing a search for dependences o… more

SOLUBLE NEUTRON POISONS AS A PRIMARY CRITICALITY CONTROL IN SHIELDED AND CONTAINED RADIOCHEMICAL FACILITIES

Description: Studies indicated that the use of soluble poisons as a primary criticality control offers economic and other advantages in that it permits the factors of vessel size and shape and solution concentrations to be dictated by considerations other than those of criticality. It is believed that soluble poison criticality control can be made as reliable as other methods of coaditional control if the application is preceded by adequate development work and is monitored by multiple. independent safeguar… more

Chemical Technology Division, Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report, May 1961

Description: The experimental results on the oxidation of H from a He stream with CuO pellets were very close to the predicted behavior based on the mathematical model. Experimental measurements of uranyl sulfate loading rates on chloride equilibrated resin showed little variation with solution concentrations. A tentative flowsbeet was proposed for cost analysis of processing a Pebble Bed Reactor. A U-Zr plate was dissolved in nitrate-free Zirflex solution. An authentic TRIGA prototype was processed in engi… more

The New Left: Students for a Democratic Society, A Supplement

Description: This report discusses Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and their Marxist views and activities aimed at uniting students and workers. Splinter factions of SDS which staged violent protests in Chicago in the summer of 1969 are discussed in detail along with a prognosis on their likely levels of success in recruiting more students to their cause.

NIGHTMARE-AN IBM 7090 CODE FOR THE CALCULATION OF GAMMA HEATING IN CYLINDRICAL GEOMETRY

Description: The NIGHTMARE program calculates the gamma-dose rate at any point in or near a reactor by means of the NDA buildup-factor method. The source distributton is obtained from a two-group, two-dimensional diffusion code (EQUIPOISE-2). Seven gamma-energy groups are used. As many as nine different concentric cylindrical regions may be considered, but only radial variation of attenuation and buildup properties is permdtted. Two schemes of estimating buildup factors through a succession of materials are… more

Conspray dynamic sleeve piston coal feeder. Phase II. Verification tests. Final technical report

Description: This report details the performance of Phase II: Verification Tests of the Conspray dynamic sleeve piston coal feeder. The machine performed for 200 hours at 700 psi backpressure, utilizing a 70% to 200 mesh Utah bituminous coal as feedstock. All test work was satisfactorily completed. A post-test inspection was performed. A report of component wear and failures incurred in testing is included as well as suggestions for machine upgrades. The overall conclusion is that the dynamic sleeve piston … more

Steady State Load Tests. Test Results T-554927

Description: Tests were performed to obtain station performance data at various steady-state generator loads. The station 0 was operated for four-hour periods at steady state conditions and levels of 5, 21, 42, and 61 Mw gross generator output. The various readings are presented in tabular form. A list is given of equipment in service during the test. All plant components operated satisfactorily during the test. (M.C.G.)

Survey of Nonmetallic Liquid Coolants for Nuclear-Power Piles

Description: A comprehensive survey of the literature was made in an effort to identify nonmetallic materials of possible usefulness as liquid coolants. Materials having maximum melting points of 1000 deg F and boiling points of l200 deg F were considered, but boiling points above 2200 deg F were preferred. Melting points, boiling points, densities, heat capacities, and thermal conductivities were tabulated. Approximately 190 materials appeared to have melting and boiling temperatures in a suitable range. A… more

Tevatron I: Large Bore Quad lamination analysis

Description: Stacking, compression, and welding of the laminations for the TeV I Large Bore Quad results in a deformation due to springback which is unacceptable due to magnetic field requirements. ANSYS has been used to analyze a solution to this problem.

Regulatable elements in the high-level waste management program

Description: Regulatable elements of a deep geological nuclear waste isolation system are those characteristics of a candidate system which need to be specified to achieve control of its performance. This report identifies the regulatable elements with respect to waste form, repository design, site suitability, and the modeling and decision analysis processes. Regulatable elements in each section are listed and described briefly as they affect the short-term and long-term performance of a deep geological re… more

Use of a General Nonlinear Least-Squares Curve Fitting Program With Nonclosed Form Relationships. [GNLS, in FORTRAN for CDC Computers]

Description: A use for GNLS, a general nonlinear least-squares curve fitting program, is presented. In this use GNLS determines a set of best parameters for relationships that cannot be written in closed form. This program can be useful for experimenters who need to determine experimental parameters by fitting nonclosed-form relationships to experimental data. Two examples are given to indicate how GNLS can be used for this type of problem. 11 figures.

Numerical study of boundary layer injection as a scale control method

Description: A boundary layer injection method of controlling scale-buildup in geothermal two-phase flow nozzles is studied. The object of this study is to set an upper limit on the ratio of the injected mass flow rate to the free stream mass flow rate that is necessary to isolate the scale carrying free stream flow from the nozzle wall. In order to develop a numerical model of the boundary layer flow, assumptions are made which reduce the results to order of magnitude approximations. Two configurations of … more

Growth of molten core debris pools in concrete. Part II. A. Pool growth in composite beds; B. Effect of overlaying steel layers. Final report, March 1, 1978-September 30, 1979. [LMFBR]

Description: The heat and mass transfer processes taking place in molten core debris/concrete systems have been experimentally investigated. Two types of experiments have been conducted. The first experiment simulates the growth of a molten debris pool in a composite sacrificial bed. This experiment models debris pool growth in an inner, low-melting point, sacrificial material zone followed by a melting attack on the concrete bed. The purpose of the inner zone is to quickly melt and dilute the debris pool s… more

Department management of the Ross Aviation, Inc. , contract aircraft major spare parts inventory, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Description: The purpose of this audit was to determine whether the Department of Energy's (Department) management of its contract with Ross Aviation, Inc. (Ross) provided reasonable assurance that the inventory of aircraft major spare parts at Ross was economical and efficient. The audit disclosed that approximately $447,000 (acquisition and interest carrying costs) of low-use major spare parts was excessive. Internal control deficiencies which fostered the excessive inventory included: (1) Ross had set st… more
