Environmental Monitoring at the Savannah River Plant, Annual Report - 1973

Description: This report summarizes results obtained from the environmental monitoring program at the Savannah River Plant during 1973. A brief discussion of plant releases to the environment and radioactivity detected in the environment is presented in the text and tables. The appendix contains tables of results from environmental sample analyses, sensitivities of laboratory analyses, and maps of sampling locations.

Prediction of Gas Injection Performance for Heterogeneous Reservoirs

Description: This report was an integrated study of the physics and chemistry affecting gas injection, from the pore scale to the field scale, and involved theoretical analysis, laboratory experiments and numerical simulation. Specifically, advances were made on streamline-based simulation, analytical solutions to 1D compositional displacements, and modeling and experimental measures of three-phase flow.

Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy of ceramic interfaces. Technical report to the Department of Energy, Office of Basic Energy Sciences

Speckle Reduction for LIDAR Using Optical Phase Conjugation

Description: Remote detection of chemicals using LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) utilizing DIAL (Differential Absorption LIDAR) is now a standard detection technique for both military and civilian activities. Natural Convection and Boiling for Cooling SRP Reactors During Loss of Circulation Conditions

Description: This study investigated natural convection and boiling as a means of cooling SRP reactors in the event of a loss of circulation accident. These studies show that single phase natural convection cooling of SRP reactors in shutdown conditions with the present piping geometry is probably not feasible.

Final technical report to Department of Energy, Basic Energy Sciences. ''Oxide ceramic alloys and microlaminates'' (1996-1999) and ''Low temperature processing and kinetics of ceramics and ceramic matrix composites with large interfacial areas'' (1999-2000)

Description: We have discovered a novel two-step sintering method that opened up a low temperature processing window within which fully dense nanocrystalline yttrium oxide was obtained with no concurrent grain growth during final-stage sintering. We have developed a new method of processing laminate ceramics using deformation processing in the green state. We have lastly developed a colloidal processing technique to encapsulate biomolecules at ambient, neutral-pH, aqueous conditions.

Mass Transfer in 12-CM Centrifugal Contactors

Description: One eight-stage unit (8-pack) of centrifugal contactors was tested in both extraction and stripping modes. Efficiencies approaching 100 percent were obtained in both modes. The contactors were operated successfully at a wide range of combined flow rates, including the HEF conditions. This report discusses the results of that test.

Microstructural and conductivity comparison of Ag films grown on amorphous TiO2 and polycrystalline ZnO

Description: 8 nm thick Ag films were sputter deposited onto amorphous TiO{sub 2} underlayers 25 nm thick, and also amorphous TiO{sub 2} (25 nm)/ZnO (5 nm) multiunderlayers. The substrates were back-etched Si with a 50 nm thick LPCVD Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} electron transparent membrane.
