The Zirflex process was studied extensively at Hanford in the development of technology for the interim reprocessing of power reactor fuels. The process involves the dissolution of Zircaloy in aqueous ammonium fluoride - ammonium nitrate solution. It is of particular interest at Hanford because of the impending fuel recovery from Zircaloy-clad PRTR and NPR elements.
