The N.A.C.A. photographic apparatus for studying fuel sprays from oil engine injection valves and test results from several researches

Description: "Apparatus for recording photographically the start, growth, and cut-off of oil sprays from injection valves has been developed at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory. The apparatus consists of a high-tension transformer by means of which a bank of condensers is charged to a high voltage. The controlled discharge of these condensers in sequence, at a rate of several thousand per second, produces electric sparks of sufficient intensity to illuminate the moving spray for photographing. The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis II. Amino Acids

Description: The radioactive amino acid's synthesized from C{sup 14}O{sub 2} by green algae both in the light and in the dark after CO{sub 2}-free preillumination have been separated and identified using paper chromatography and radioautography. The radioactive amino acids identified were aspartic acid, alanine and smaller amounts of 3- and 4-carbon amino acids. This finding as well as the total absence of radioactive glutamic acid substantiates the mechanism for reduction of CO{sub 2} previously postulated… more

Effects of inlet icing on performance of axial-flow turbojet engine in natural icing conditions

Description: A flight investigation in natural icing conditions was conducted to determine the effect of inlet ice formations on the performance of axial-flow turbojet engines. The results are presented for icing conditions ranging from a liquid-water content of 0.1 to 0.9 gram per cubic meter and water-droplet size from 10 to 27 microns at ambient-air temperature from 13 to 26 degrees F. The data show time histories of jet thrust, air flow, tail-pipe temperature, compressor efficiency, and icing parameters… more

Investigation of annular liquid flow with concurrent air flow in horizontal tubes

Description: Report presenting visual observations and flow analyses made of annular liquid flow with cocurrent air flow in 2- and 4-inch-diameter horizontal transparent tubes. The experiments occurred over a range of air mass velocities, air temperatures, and Reynolds numbers. Results regarding the velocity and thickness of liquid films, description of water-film disturbances, effect of flow variables on liquid-film characteristics, and relation between disturbances and flow conditions are provided.

The Polarographic Determination of Uranium in the Presence of Plutonium

Description: Strubl's polarographic method for the determination of uranium in the presence of iron can be used for the determination of uranium in plutonium solutions. A hydroxylamine hydrochloride solution (2M) is used as the supporting electrolyte. This reduces the plutonium to the plus three oxidation state without reducing the uranium. The uranium may then be determined polarographically by measuring the height of the uranyl reduction wave (UVI to UV) at -0.35 volts (vs. S.C.E.) applied potential. Solu… more

Free-Jet Altitude Investigation of a 20-Inch Ram-Jet Combustor With a Rich Inner Zone of Combustion for Improved Low-Temperature-Ratio Operation

Description: From Summary: "An investigation of the altitude performance of a 20-inch-diameter high-temperature-ratio ram-jet combustor which had been redesigned to provide good combustor efficiency over a wide range of temperature ratios was conducted at zero angle of attack in a free-jet facility at a Mach number of 3.0. Configurations investigated incorporated a cylindrical control sleeve which confined the injected fuel at low over-all fuel-air ratios to about 40 percent of the engine air flow. This pro… more
