High-Thermal-Conductivity Fin Material for Radiators

Description: This report is the result of a study to develop heat-resistant fin materials possessing a high thermal conductivity for air radiators. Since an economical and commercially feasible product was desired, the investigation was restricted primarily to a study of electroplated copper, clad copper, and copper alloys. Sheet material 0.008 to 0.010 in. thick was evaluated for fabricability and for metallurgical stability and thermal conductivity at 1500°F. From the results of the rests it was concluded that: (1) electroplates were unsatisfactory; (2) clad-copper fins possessing a thermal conductivity of 50% of that of copper are commercially feasible; (3) copper-aluminum alloys possessing a thermal conductivity approaching that of copper at 1500°F are possible. Service tests of clad copper and the copper-aluminum alloys indicate that the choice of materials will be dictated by the requirements of the radiator, since each presents some unique problems.

Thorex Thorium Nitrate Product Specifications

Description: Activity and ionic impurity specifications are presented for Thorex thorium nitrate products. Two sets of specifications are given, one set for direct handling during refabrication of production reactor thorium metal slugs and the second for refabrication of future power reactor thorium metal elements by semi-remote technics. Consideration was given to the health hazard problems associated with each process step between the Thorex process and final refabricated source material in order to arrive at these specifications.

Bulk ThO2, a Reactor Material

Description: Thorium, a fertile material, is of interest to the Reactor Program in the production of U233. Thorium can be extracted and processed to a very pure bulk metal for fabrication into solid fertile elements. There are advantages, technical and economic, for using fabricated bulk thorium dioxide rather than the metal in some applications. It is the purpose of this paper to point out these advantages and to present briefly the technology related to fabrication, radiation damage and chemical processing of ThO2.

Determination of Corrosion Products and Additives in Homogeneous Reactor Fuel III. Polarographic Determination of Iron(III)

Description: An ion-exchange -- polarographic method was developed for the determination of iron(III) in Homogeneous Reactor Fuels. Copper, which interferes, is removed from the fuel by plating it onto a cadmium coil. Iron is oxidized to iron(III) by potassium permanganate, and the iron(III) is separated from interfering metal ions by ion exchange on a Dowex 1 resin column that is in the sulfate form. The iron(III) in the effluent is determined polarographically in 0.5 M sodium citrate solution as supporting electrolyte. A fairly well defined polarographic wave is obtained for the iron(III) → iron(II) reduction at a half-wave potential of approximately -0.15 v. vs. the S.C.E. The relative standard deviation of the data for 2 µg of iron(III) per ml of solution in the polarographic cell was 6.5%; for 10 µg of iron(III) per ml it was 0.6%.

Electronuclear Research Division Semiannual Progress Report For Period Ending March 20, 1955

Description: The ORNL 86-in. cyclotron is being modified to provide for deflection of the proton beam. It is expected that operation will be resumed late in the spring. Nuclear physics work was limited, for the most part, to interpretation of previously collected data and to making preparations for utilizing the deflected beam. It was found that for certain isotopes the production rates could be almost doubled by operating at a slightly reduced energy and a much larger current. With the use of the ORNL 63-in. cyclotron, the absolute values of the electron capture and loss cross sections for 26-Mev nitrogen ions were obtained. The angular distribution of the cross sections for elastic scattering of nitrogen by nitrogen was measured at energies from 13 to 22 Mev. A double-focusing 90-deg magnet is being planned for use in identifying stable reaction products from nitrogen-induced reactions. The major components of the revised 44-in. test cyclotron were assembled and are being tested. Consideration is being given to the use of these components, along with a new 20,000-oersted magnet and a shielded cyclotron room, and if the tests are satisfactory the Laboratory will have available a machine which will accelerate N5+ ions to 81 Mev.

The Resonance Absorption Spectrum of Uranium

Description: A model for the capture spectrum of uranium is introduced in which levels occur at 7, 30, 30+D, 30+2D, ..., ev. Gamma ray and neutron widths are derived from the experimental data for values of D between 10 and 25 ev. The constants of the 7 volt level prove to be independent of D. Extrapolation, using the one level formula, gives a capture cross section at (1/40) ev of 4.9 x 10(24) cm2; this number is, however, quite sensitive to the value taken for the resonance activation. Both neutron and gamma ray widths for the higher levels are approximately proportional to D.

Description: The multiplication factor and minimum pile size for a multiplying pile using UO2 powder of density 1 have been computed. It appears that a k of 1.0177 is possible for a volume ration of V/V001=3.33.

High Pressure Research at Low Temperatures

Description: Two principle reasons exist for the extension of high pressure research to temperatures near absolute zero. First, the comparison of certain data with theory (such as the pressure-volume relationship) is more meaningful if the effects of thermal vibrations can be ignored. Second, there are phenomena which can be studied only at low temperatures. These include superconductivity, the properties of solid helium and other inert gases, some electronic phenomena, etc.

Use of the Characteristics of Permalloy in Detecting a Predetermined Value of Magnetic Field or Current in a Time-Varying Electromagnet: 1/4 Scale Bevatron Operating Model, Magnetic Field Strength-Magnet Current Correspondence

Description: In programming the sequence of events in the operational cycle of the bevatron, certain devices must be triggered at specific values of magnetic field strength in the gap. It is desirable that the time-jitter, which corresponds to field jitter, of the tirggering pulses be small. In the synchrotron this is done with peaking strips which are located in the fringing field of the gap.

The Photoproduction of Mesons from Hydrogen

Description: In an effort to gain information on the nature of the photon-meson and photon-nucleon interaction, a study of the artificial production of mesons by photons has been made at the Berkeley synchrotron. The major effort of this research was concentrated on a measurement of the energy and angular distribution of u+-mesons produced when the photons strike a target of liquid hydrogen. Detection of the mesons is accomplished electronically by the technique of delayed coincidence.

The Maintenance of Animals Containing Radioactive Materials

Description: Abstract: In the Biology Division, the maintenance of animals containing radioactive materials posed many problems. In addition to routine care of the animals, protection had to be provided for the personnel who worked with the contaminated animals. Frequent air changed in the room in which the animals were caged were necessary: farm workers were required to wear masks; animal cages were checked regularly for radiation; acid was used on the sawdust in the excrete pens; and a new, more efficient type of cage was designed. The most import feature of the new cage was that the support for the screen floor was outside the confines of the cage. Stainless steel was the preferred metal for case construction. Photographs and working drawings of cages for mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and goats, and several types of metabolism cases are included in this paper. Cage decontamination was accomplished with the aid of complexing agents such as citric acid or sodium tartrate. Under certain conditions, nitric acid was used.

Development of Pulsed Neutron Application to Power Reactor Start-Up Procedures. Seventh and Eighth Quarterly Progress Report, October 1, 1963-March 31, 1964

Description: Activities in a program to develop techniques in the use of pulsed neutron sources to measure shutdown parameters related to large thermal power reactors are reported. In the course of this program, a new theory was suggested and an experimental apparatus was designed and built. Experiments were carried out to test the new model. This present report contains additional data and information extracted from the experiments at PG&E Humboldt Bay Power Reactor at Eureka, California. During the last days of 1963 a number of control rod and fuel bundle worth measurements were made in the ESADA Vallecitos Experimental Superheat Reactor (EVESR) using the (k[beta]/[script l] technique. A description of the experiments is given in the text of the report and some results are reported. A computer program was written to perform the data analysis of the pulsed neutron experiments and the code is discussed in the Appendix.

A Program of Two-Phase Flow Investigation Quarterly Report: First Quarterly Report, March-June, 1963

Description: Task A: Modification and Preparation of Experimental Facility. Facility engineering and layout is about seventy-five percent complete. Task B: Design and Construction of Test Sections. The major dimensions and characteristics of the metal and glass test sections have been calculated. One feasibility test of the electrically conducting coating on samples of glass tubing has been completed. Task C: Design and Construction of Test Stand, Task E: Pressure and Temperature Instrumentation for Test Section and Task F: Power Supply for Test Section. Preliminary engineering has been initiated on these tasks. The planned approach has been defined in each case. For Task E the transducer specifications have been defined and quotations on and/or sample units of the transducers have been requested. Tasks C and F can proceed with detailing as soon as drafting on Task B is about 50 percent complete. This point is scheduled to be reached during the first part of July. Task D: Void Fraction Instrumentation. The requirements for the x-ray instrumentation have been considered in the course of Task B and the x-ray power supply is presently on hand. The detailed engineering effort on this task is not scheduled to begin before July.
