Performance of Three High-Recovery-Factor Thermocouple Probes for Room-Temperature Operation

Description: "Thermocouple probes have been designed to measure with small error the total temperature of gas moving at high velocities. Two major designed are presented: one is applicable to the construction of rakes and the other, of which there are two variations, can be used where exceptional accuracy is desired. The probes were calibrated in two jets; one jet exhausted into the atmosphere and the other into a pressure-controlled receiver" (p. 1).

Effects of altitude on turbojet engine performance

Description: From Summary: "Component and over-all performance characteristics of several turbojet engines investigated in the altitude facilities of the NACA Lewis Laboratory during the last several years are summarized to indicate the effects of altitude on turbojet engine performance. Data presented show that failure of turbojet engine performance to generalize for all altitudes can be traced to reductions in compressor efficiency, corrected air flow, and combustion efficiency at altitude. In addition, i… more

The corrosion of Hanford fuel elements: Method for the treatment and analyses of in-pile corrosion data

Description: The corrosion rates of slug jackets exposed in the Hanford piles are monitored to determine optimum operating conditions and to evaluate proposed changes in process specifications. Selected process tubes are charged with weighed slugs, and the coolant flow rate and temperature rise through the tubes are recorded until the slugs are discharged. The corrosion rates of these control slugs are computed from weight loss data after discharge. The data obtained in this manner are used to find the rela… more

Description: Report presenting experimental panel flutter data at a range of Mach numbers for buckled rectangular panels and the effect of a pressure differential. Increasing the pressure differential was found to eliminate flutter on most of the panels tested. Results regarding buckled panels clamped on the front and rear edges, bucked panels clamped on four edges, effect of lengthwise stiffeners on the flutter of a buckled panel, and panel flutter stresses are provided.

Data were obtained at solidities of 1.0 and 1.5 at inlet-air angles of 45 deg. and 60 deg. for both blade sections. With a solid--wall modification to the cascade tunnel, schlieren observations were made of the flow in cascade at a solidity of 1.5 and inlet-air angle of 45 deg. and at a solidity of 1.0 and inlet-air angle of 60… more

Investigation of Interference Lift, Drag, and Pitching Moment of a Series of Triangular-Wing and Body Combinations at a Mach Number of 1.94

Description: Report presenting an investigation at Mach number 1.94 of a series of triangular-wing and body combinations to determine the interference lift, drag, and pitching moment. The models had a series of seven flat-plate triangular wings of varying scale, four with semiapex angles of 30 degrees, and three with semiapex angles of 45 degrees. Results indicated that the interference between the wing and the body gave an increase in lift over the wing and body alone, but at the expense of more drag.

Hazards summary report: Projects CG-558 and CG-600 reactor plant modifications. Volume 1

Description: It is believed that the overall safety of reactor operation will be improved upon completion of projects CG-558, 600, even at the higher power levels anticipated. Installation of sub-critical monitoring instruments concurrent with these projects is a factor in this conclusion. Higher power levels will not of themselves increase the probability of a disaster initiating event; however, higher power levels will reduce the time available for remedial action and will increase the severity of the con… more
