Measurements Through a Hot Cell Window Using Optical Tooling

Description: S>Optical tooling has been evaluated for the measurement of physical dimensions of radioactive parts through hot cell windows. Instruments were set up outside of a four foot thick lead glass window and by means of a grid plate which had been accurately scribed, a ''contour map'' or calibration chart of the window variations was recorded. Although the window was not specially selected, the readings were within 1.0% of the true dimension without using correction factors. One of the calibration ch… more

Electric Utility Provisions in House-Passed H.R. 6, 109th Congress

Description: This report describes Title XII of the House-passed H.R. 6 in the 109th Congress and other sections that deal with electric power issues. In part, Title XII would create an electric reliability organization (ERO) that would enforce mandatory reliability standards for the bulk-power system. All ERO standards would be approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Under this title, the ERO could impose penalties on a user, owner, or operator of the bulk-power system that violates an… more

Stable Isotope Variations in Banded Iron Formations

Description: In spite of the significant amount of work already reported in the scientific literature, many aspects of the origin of Banded Iron Formations (BIF) remain enigmatic. The authors demonstrate that mineralogic microbanding in BIF is accompanied by autocorrelated isotopic microbanding of organic carbon and carbonate carbon and oxygen. They propose that these isotopic patterns formed as a result of episodic mixing of waters in the depositional environment of BIF.

MODEL 9977 B(M)F-96 SAFETY ANALYSIS REPORT FOR PACKAGING

Description: This Safety Analysis Report for Packaging (SARP) documents the analysis and testing performed on and for the 9977 Shipping Package, referred to as the General Purpose Fissile Package (GPFP). The performance evaluation presented in this SARP documents the compliance of the 9977 package with the regulatory safety requirements for Type B packages. Per 10 CFR 71.59, for the 9977 packages evaluated in this SARP, the value of ''N'' is 50, and the Transport Index based on nuclear criticality control i… more

Electroweak physics: search for zz and zw production in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96 tev

Description: We present a search for ZZ and ZW vector boson pair production in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV using the leptonic decay channels ZZ {yields} llvv, ZZ {yields} lll'l' and ZW {yields} lll'v. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 194 pb{sup -1} collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab, 3 candidate events are found with an expected background of 1.0 {+-} 0.2 events. We set a 95% confidence level upper limit of 15.2 pb on the cross section for ZZ plus … more

Mass Sensor

Description: The purpose of this CRADA was to use Honeywell's experience in low temperature cofire ceramics and traditional ceramics to assemble a relatively low-cost, mass-producible miniature mass analyzer. The specific design, given to us by Mass Sensors, LLC, was used to test for helium. The direct benefit for the participant was to have a prototype unit assembled for the purpose of proof of concept and the ability to secure venture capital investors. From that, the company would begin producing their o… more

High efficiency shale oil recovery

Description: The overall project objective is to demonstrate the high efficiency of the Adams Counter-Current shale oil recovery process. The efficiency will first be demonstrated at bench-scale, in the current phase, after which the demonstration will be extended to the operation of a small pilot plant. Thus the immediate project objective is to obtain data on oil shale retorting operations in a small batch rotary kiln that will be representative of operations in the proposed continuous process pilot plant… more

Experimental determination of drag coefficients in low-density polyurethane foam

Description: We describe several experiments performed at the LLNL Site 300 firing range and on the LLNL 1/3 scale gun to investigate the deceleration of small projectiles (l {approx} 3-5 [mm]) in low-density foam ({rho} {approx} 0.08-0.32 [g/cm{sup 3}]). The experiments at the firing range researched a passive velocity diagnostic based on Faraday's law of induction, while experiments on the 1/3 scale gun investigated the effects of varying projectile surface area, projectile shape, and foam density on the … more

EVALUATION OF FISSION GAS ADSORPTION TRAPS FOR ORNL-MTR-44 LOOP EXPERIMENT

Description: A method of predicting the performance of fission gas adsorption traps containing activated charcoal is presented. This method is applied in the evaluation of the fission gas traps designed for use in the ORNL-MTR44 loop experiment. The method should also be applicable in evaluating fission gas traps contained in other reactor experiments. (auth)

Biological monitoring program for East Fork Poplar Creek

Description: In May 1985, a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit was issued for the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. As a condition of the permit, a Biological Monitoring and Abatement Program (BMAP) was developed to demonstrate that the effluent limitations established for the Y-12 Plant protect the classified uses of the receiving stream (East Fork Poplar Creek; EFPC), in particular, the growth and propagation of aquatic life (Lear et al. 1989). A second objective of the BMAP is to document… more
