Evaluation of the Blake Sodium Resistivity Meter

Description: Report issued by the APDA over an evaluation of the toroid sodium resistivity meter. Studies were conducted on carbon and oxygen contamination. As stated in the introduction, "the meter was also subjected to extensive testing in which variations in temperature, flow rate, and supply voltage were made in order to determine signal stability and effective range" (p. 5). This report includes tables, illustrations, and photographs.

Experimental Studies of Transient Effects in Fast Reactor Fuels

Description: An experimental program to evaluate the performance of FCR and EFCR fuel during transient operation is outlined, and the initial series of tests are described in some detail. Test results from five experiments in the TREAT reactor, using 1-in. OD SS-clad UO₂ fuel specimens, are compared with regard to fuel temperatures, mechanical integrity, and post-irradiation appearance. Incipient fuel pin failure limits for transients are identified with maximum fuel temperatures in the range of 7000 deg F.… more

Reactor process flow technical data

Description: A computer program is being developed for the solution of general system flow problems. As a complement to this program, a summary of the process system has been prepared. This assembles information from a number of different reports, drawings and technical notebooks into one place for easy use and reference. It is expected that the information contained in this report will be of use in safety and design studies of these process systems. This report presents current values of the reactor flow c… more

Control rod studies (Tory II-C)

Description: This memorandum outlines the area of interest in connection with the SSBN launch application, on modification of the Tory II-C control rod system; and suggest a plan of development of information. Because of the very limited space for overall missile length, little room is available for control rod motion upstream from the core. Shortening the rod stroke, and the total length occupied by control rod mechanism., becomes very desirable. Changes in the actuator and linkage mechanism will clearly h… more

Radiation Effects in Borides, Part II. Fission Sintering of Boride Powders

Description: During the post-irradiation examination of borides it was discovered that the samples which had been irradiated as powders had sintered into firmly bonded bodies. This radiation sintering occurred at temperatures hundreds of degrees below that required to produce similar interparticle bonding by the application of heat alone. , This report discusses the results of the postirradiation examination of some of these borides which were irradiated as powders and compares the results of our observatio… more

Criteria of the Post-Operative Cells, E-MAD Facility

Description: The purpose of this report is to present information on the design requirements of the post-operative cells at the E-MAD facility. It contains our reference operation plan, requirements for the post-operative cells, the cell service area, the warm machine shop and the manipulator repair area. This report is based on the best information presently available. The reference operation plan will be changed, as required, to be compatible with the E-MAD final design and the final design of the reactor. more

FEASIBILITY STUDY ON THE DIFFUSION BONDING OF URANIUM

Description: Studies were made on the feasibility of effecting diffusion bonding in U, using pure Au as a catalyst, and by solid state diffusion without the use of a catalyst. It was found that the Au appeared to have promising characteristics for catalyzing the diffusion bonding reaction in joining uranium to itself. Phase diagrams are given U-Au, U--Cr, U--Co, U--Cu, U--Fe, U--Mn, and U--Ni alloys. (P.C.H.)

Statistical Analysis of SNAP 10A Thermoelectric Converter Element Process Development Variables

Description: Statistical analysis, primarily analysis of variance, was applied to evaluate several factors involved in the development of suitable fabrication and processing techniques for the production of lead telluride thermoelectric elements for the SNAP 10A energy conversion system. The analysis methods are described as to their application for determining the effects of various processing steps, estabIishing the value of individual operations, and evaluating the significance of test results. The elimi… more

SNAP Shield Test Experiment Fission-Plate Power Calibration

Description: Three techniques were employed in measuring the fission rate of the STE (SNAP Shield Test Experiment) fission source plate; the thermal neutron absorption rate, power dissipation (calorimetric method), and the fission-neutron production technique. The results obtained, when weighted according to the reciprocal of the squares of the estimated errors, yielded a fission rate of 1.97 x 10/sup 12/ fissions/sec plus or minus 4% for a STE reactor power level of 50 kw. Assuming that 190 Mev of usable e… more
