Rocket-Borne IR Scanning Radiometer for High Altitude Radiation Measurements

Description: Report describing a transistorized, scanning, filter radiometer designed for use in an Atlas piggy-back pod. The instrument is designed for moderately narrow-band measurements at 2.7, 3.5, 4.3, 4.7, and 6.3 microns of the irradiance arriving at the radiometer from the earth's atmosphere within a small field of view as a function of height above the true horizon. The measurements will be made while the vehicle is in the altitude range 3 x 100,000 to 10 to the 6th power feet. A fairly complete de… more

An Investigation Of Thermal Diffusion Separation Of U-232 - U-233 As An Alternate To Remote Processing

Description: Liquid phase thermal diffusion separation of U-232 - U-233 has been investigated as a possible alternative to remote processing. The calculations were based on a horizontal type thermal diffusion column operating 24 hours/day on the spent thorium fuel on one Consolidated Edison reactor, the latter producing 8 tons irradiated thorium/year.

The Effect of Closed Porosity on the Accuracy of the Model for Fission-Gas Release From UO2

Description: The presence of UO2 compacts of closed pores capable of retaining fission-product gases introduces a factor which is not considered in the normal treatment of fission-gas behavior. An analysis indicates that if a "no-closed-porosity" model is used to obtain diffusion coefficients from short-term experiments, and the same model employed to predict the gas release under power reactor conditions, the predicted value will be correct for the initial part of the exposure. However, for longer periods, … more

The Chemistry And Biosynthesis Of Isotopically Labeled Cellulose: Progress Report April 10, 1953

Description: The methods for locating the position occupied by C14 in the glucose units in bio synthesized cellulose were tested with authentic glucose-1-C14, with satisfactory results. Application of the methods to another glucose-C14 yielded results which matched those obtained by an independent investigator.

Review of the Surface Interaction Theory of Rearrangement and Inelastic Collisions

Description: Deuteron reactions assumed new importance when it was found that the angular distribution of the outgoing particles in d-p and d-n reactions displayed a great deal of structure. Bhatia, Huang, and Butler showed that the structures of the angular distribution of the outgoing particles in d-p and d-n reactions is directly related to the angular momentum of the captured particle. Early studies of deuteron stripping fractions were reviewed and summarized by R. Huby. Additional work was reviewed, an… more

Flow-Gating I : Report No. 83

Description: The simple problem occurring in a computer of transferring a zero or a one from one place to another in a selective fashion is considered by discussing the transmission of information from one Eccles-Jordan flipflop to another. It is assumed that non-overlapping voltage bands represent the zero and one signals the bands being caused by parameter drift.

Radiofrequency Acceleration II

Description: A radiofrequency system consisting of 16 cavities, strongly coupled together by transmission line, is analyzed. This system can be regarded as a single cavity operating in a particular mode, and is found to be a practical system for the accelerator. Also methods rf coupling r-f power into the system are considered. The r-f system with beam loading is analyzed for stability, and a relationship determined for the range of the cavity tuning over which the system is stable.

Radiation Damage to Vacuum Chamber Walls

Description: "The problem of radiation derange to the walls of two types of vacuum chamber for the 6 Bev Cambridge Electron Accelerator was studied. Radiation damage may arise from the synchrotron radiation and from electrons which are not accepted at injection. The synchrotron radiation produces a large amount of secondary x radiation which is isotropic, and therefore complicates the arrangement of internal shielding. The 20 Mev electrons from the lines cannot be attenuated by shielding. It is concluded th… more
