Analysis of fracture modes during extrusion and drawing of bimetal rods or wire. Analytical study of drawing and extrusion of superconducting filamentary wires: fracture problems and evaluation of temperature rise. Final report

Description: Based on the upper-bound theorem in limit analysis, a theoretical model describing sound flow, core fracture, and sleeve fracture in bimetal rods and wire during extrusion and drawing was developed. The variables affecting core and sleeve fracture are: reduction in area, die geometry, friction, relative size and strength of the core, and applied surface tractions. Within the wide range of combinations of these process variables, only a small range permits co-extrusion and codrawing without frac… more

Evaluation of filter media for clarification of partially dissolved residues containing plutonium

Description: A common process in the chemical industry employs the leaching of a desirable component from an insoluble substrate, followed by filtration to produce a clarified solution of the desirable component and a discardable residue. The work described here involved evaluating sintered metal filter media for separating dissolved plutonium from undissolved residues generated at various locations owned by the Department of Energy throughout the United States. The work was performed during a six-week assi… more

Pretreatment of Kapton-coated cable for epoxy adhesion

Description: Preliminary testing of a new system for protecting bonded strain gages that will be attached to the MFTF magnets indicated falling electrical resistance to ground, attributed to the infiltration of moisture. The most likely infiltration route seemed to be along the Kapton lead cable, which has an outer surface of FEP fluorocarbon resin. Samples of the cable were pretreated with a fluorocarbon etchant, Tetra-Etch, for periods of 10, 25, and 40 s at room temperature, followed by rinsing with demi… more

Testing and evaluation of doubly impacted simulant-fueled Milliwatt Generator heat sources

Description: As part of the Milliwatt Generator (MWG) Program, 12 simulant-fueled heat sources were fabricated double impact tested, and evaluated at Mound. Ten assemblies were tested at approx. 80 m/sec, and two were tested at approx. 105 m/sec. None of the strength members were breached; therefore, no fuel would have been released as a result of double impacts at the velocities and orientations tested at 450/sup 0/C. There was little difference in results for duplicate tests conducted approx. 80 and appro… more

Pulse*Star Inertial Confinement Fusion Reactor: heat transfer loop and balance of plant considerations

Description: A conceptual heat transfer loop and balance of plant design for the Pulse*Star Inertial Confinement Fusion Reactor has been investigated and results are presented. The Pulse*Star reaction vessel, a perforated steel bell jar approximately 11 m in diameter, is immersed in Li/sub 17/Pb/sub 83/ coolant which flows through the perforations and forms a 1.5 m thick plenum of droplets around an 8 m diameter inner chamber. The reactor and associated pumps, piping, and steam generators are contained with… more

Conceptual design study FY 1981: synfuels from fusion - using the tandem mirror reactor and a thermochemical cycle to produce hydrogen

Description: This report represents the second year's effort of a scoping and conceptual design study being conducted for the express purpose of evaluating the engineering potential of producing hydrogen by thermochemical cycles using a tandem mirror fusion driver. The hydrogen thus produced may then be used as a feedstock to produce fuels such as methane, methanol, or gasoline. The main objective of this second year's study has been to obtain some approximate cost figures for hydrogen production through a … more

LLNL Underground-Coal-Gasification Project. Quarterly progress report, July-September 1981

Description: We have continued our laboratory studies of forward gasification in small blocks of coal mounted in 55-gal drums. A steam/oxygen mixture is fed into a small hole drilled longitudinally through the center of the block, the coal is ignited near the inlet and burns toward the outlet, and the product gases come off at the outlet. Various diagnostic measurements are made during the course of the burn, and afterward the coal block is split open so that the cavity can be examined. Development work con… more

Preparing the Alcator C bolometer system for use on MTX (Microwave Tokamak Experiment)

Description: The Alcator C bolometer array has been modified to be compatible with electron cyclotron heating on the Microwave Tokamak Experiment. Fine wire mesh screens are mounted on the front of the bolometer collimator tubes to attenuate microwave heating of the bolometers. Structural changes eliminate openings in the seams of the bolometer housing, which represent pathways for microwaves to enter the system. This paper outlines the operational principles of the bolometer system, discusses the measured … more

Evolution of the 400 MeV linac design

Description: The basic premises of the conceptual design for the linac upgrade are pursued to establish lengths, gradients, power dissipation, etc., for the 400 MeV linac and matching section. The discussion is limited to accelerating and focusing components. Wherever values depend on the choice of the accelerating structure, the disk-and-washer structure is emphasized; the results are generally relevant to the side coupled cavity choice also.

Debunching into a bucket of lower harmonic number

Description: The adiabatic debunching of beam from buckets of higher harmonic number into waiting buckets of lower harmonic number is a critical step in the current scheme of operation for Tev I. The optimum choice of rf system parameters for this ''bunch coalescing'' process is not immediately obvious. In this note two examples are presented along with generalizations based upon them and experience with the Tevatron I design which can simplify the selection of appropriate parameters for different condition… more
