Observed Heat Transfer In HRT Fuel And Blanket Heat Exchangers

Description: Data obtained during power operation of the HRT indicates that during the circulation of fuel solution at high temperatures for more than 260 days there was a small increase in heat transfer resistance in the heat exchangers. The change in heat transfer correlates with the increase of the amount of corrosion product solids in the reactor fuel system.

Curves For Computation of Kinetic Isotope Effects

Description: Curves are provided for rapid estimation of k*/k from the measured value of the percent of the labeled substrate converted and the measured molar radioactivity of I accumulated labeled product, II residual labeled substrate, or III a small increment of product. These curves are applicable to calculation of kinetic isotope effects due to isotopic substitution of elements other than hydrogen.

Effect of Different Sets of Cross-Sections on Cf-252 Production in the HFIR

Description: Production rates of Cf-252 calculated from neutron cross sections compiled at Berkeley, KAPL and Argonne were compared with that calculated in CF-59-8-125. In the range of interest, the maximum difference was about a factor of three.

Reaction Cross Sections Using the Statistical Model of the Compound Nucleus

Description: The inelastic scattering of neutrons was considered by Hauser and Feshbach and a reaction cross section formula was obtained for the process. The analysis in this paper will be concerned with the minor changes involved when competition from other processes and the possibility of particles other than neutrons as incident and emergent particles are included.

Radiation Functions For The (n, 2n) Reactions In Ge, Sc, As, Tl, And Ni*

Description: In the high energy region neutrons can be expected to induce the (n, 2n) reaction. In some cases the residual nucleus will have a radioactivity which can be counted. The dependence of the yield of the reaction on the incident neutron energy is of interest, and has been determined for a number of isotopes.

Free-Free Gaunt Factors

Description: The hydrogenic (unscreened coulomb) free-free gaunt factors are computed for a wide range of initial energies and photon frequencies. In addition, an average over initial energies with the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution is performed to give the temperature-average gaunt factors for use on opacity calculations. The relation between these gaunt factors and the rate of bremsstrahlung energy product is given as is the total energy emitted.

Description: As previously reported, zirconium undergoes large dimensional increases after scaling in air in a critical temperature range, 700 degree-1050 degree C. Studies of Surface Contamination: 1. Intercomparison of Methods for Measuring "Removable" Contamination.

Description: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the smear and adhesive paper techniques for measuring [radioactive] surface contamination, and to compare these with a new method of sample collection. This third sampling procedure employs air impingement to redisperse loose contamination from the surface and the resulting airborne material then is collected on a filter.

Analog Study of the Reference Design of the Gas-Cooled ORR Loop No. 1

Description: A stimulation study of the deign as of June 1960 of the gas-cooled ORR Loop No. 1 was made using the ORNL analog computer. The proposed method of temperature control is evaluated, and the dynamic behavior of the loop for accidents and component failures is presented in graphical form.

Preliminary Design of a 10-Mw(t) Pebble-Bed Reactor Experiment

Description: The objectives of this study have been to examine the problems of the pebble-bed reactor concept and to conceive a design of a facility for investigating the feasibility of this type of reactor. The design must provide for adequate leaktightness of the contaminated-gas system and adequate maintenance of contaminated components, the most vital feasibility questions of the concept.

Chemical Development Section C Monthly Progress Report August 1959

Description: Uranium extractions from carbonate solutions were effective and phase separation rates were rapid using a new commercial quaternary extractant, Alamine 336. Extraction coefficients were approximately proportional to the quaternary concentration. Addition of -0.5 mole tridecanol/mole quaternary to the solvent gave optimum extraction efficiency and phase separation rates.
