Checking the Operation of a Nuclear Counting Channel

Description: Quantitative criteria for judging the performance of a nuclear counting channel are discussed. Several procedures for evaluating the performance of the counting channels were combined with statistical tests of significance into one method or test. A Coated Cast Iron Crucible for Use With Eutectic Al-Si Alloy in the Temperature Range 595-650 C

Description: The feasibility of the coated metal crucible as a container for eutectic Al--Si alloy was proven by test. Small enamel-coated east-iron pets have successfully withstood Al-- Si alloys and an oxidizing atmosphere for a period of 3 months at 725 deg C. A similarly coated east-iron crucible containing 450 pounds of eutectic Al--Si alloy was successfully tested for 144 days in a jacketing operation conducted at 595 deg to 650 deg C. Under the same conditions, the normal service life of clay-bonded … more

Spallation-Fission Competition in Heaviest Elements; HeliumIon-Induced Reactions in Uranium Isotopes

Description: A radiochemical study of fission and spallation products produced by bombardment of U{sup 233}, U{sup 235}, and U{sup 238} with 18-46 Mev helium ions has been made. As in the case of similar studies using isotopes of plutonium as targets, most of the reaction cross section is taken up by fission. Also, the pronounced increase of the total cross section for ({alpha},xn) reactions with increasing mass number of the target that was observed for plutonium targets is observed for uranium targets.

An X-Ray Spectrometric Method for Determination of Plutonium in Solution

Description: It is shown that the method of x-ray emission spectrometry can be extended advantageously to the determination of plutonium in solution, Since K and L x-ray emission from the elements of higher atomic number is not measurably influenced by valence state of the emitting atom or ion, this physical method is especially attractive for elements such as plutonium whose chemistry is intricate and whose chemical analysis is complicated by several valence states existing in solution. Nor is it affected … more

Annihilation of Nuclei by Displacement Spikes

Description: At an Octcber, 1957 meeting between USAEC, AECL, and Bettis personnel, the theoretical aspects of the radiation effects on the gamma red and alpha + gamma /sub 2/ transformation in U-Nb alloys were discussed. A theoretical model is presented which involves the annihilation of nuclei of the new phase by the action of displacement spikes. (W.D.M.)

Description: A survey of all the known literature on the subject is presented. This survey consists of four parts amd two appendices, namely: response of single- phase-fluid forced-convection heat transfer to a rapid change of velocity, response of single-phase-fluid forced-convection heat transfer to a rapid change of temperature of the surface or of the incoming fluid, response of single- phasefluid free-convection heat transfer to a rapid change of the surface temperature or of the heat flux through the … more

LONGITUDINAL DISPERSION IN SOLVENT-EXTRACTION COLUMNS: PECLET NUMBERS FOR ORDERED AND RANDOM PACKINGS

Description: Dispersion phenomena in packed beds in both axial and radial directions were studied to provide basic data for extraction-tower design. Nine different beds were used, involving regular and random arrangements of spheres, and random arrangements of Raschig rings and Intalox saddles. For one-phase flow a wide range of Reynolds numbers was used (5 to 2000), covering regions of laminar, transition, and turbulent flow. For the axial Peclet number, different constant values were found in the turbulen… more

AN ESTIMATE OF THE NONLEAKAGE PROBABILITY FOR BARE AQUEOUS HOMOGENEOUS U$sup 235$ REACTORS

Description: The slowing-down distribution, to thermal energy, of neutrons from a U/ sup 235/ fission source in an infinite H/sub 2/O medium up to 160 cm was determined from experimental data. The Fourier transform of this distribution and the In resonance distribution, which are the nonleakage probabilities for bare reactors, were also determined. (auth)

Uranium Recovery, Uranium Geochemistry, Thermoluminescence and Related Studies. Final Report

Description: The recovery of urantum at the mine with portable equipment was shown to be feasible, using a process which involves grinding the ore, leaching with nitric acid, extracting with tributyl phosphate and kerosene, and precipitation with ammonia gas. The system is more expensive than a stationary plant but couid be used in an emergency or in difficulty accessible locations. The distribution of uranium was studied in various geographical locations and in several different materials including limesto… more

The EBR-I Meltdown--Physical and Metallurgical Changes in the Core. Final Report--Metallurgy Program 7.2.18

Description: As a result of the partial meltdown which occurred in EBR-1 on November 29, 1955, it was necessary to remove the core assembly from the reactor and to separate the enriched fuel section from upper and lower unenriched blanket sections. A temporary cave was constructed on top of the reactor in order to remove the core assembly, and at this time about one-fourth of the fuel elements were removed. In order to perform further disassembly operations under less hazardous conditions, the core assembly… more

CHANGE IN CRITICAL CONCENTRATION IN A CYLINDRICAL REACTOR DUE TO A LONGITUDINAL HOLE

Description: The change in critical concentration due to axial holes of various diameters in a right circular cylinder containing D/sub 2/O and pure U/sup 233/ or U/sup 235/ is discussed. This geometry is intended to represent an aqueous homogeneous reactor with a central void due to rotating flow of the fluid through the core. The critical equations and results of calculations are given. (M.H.R.)

A new and promising method of minimizing a function of n variables has been found, and a method applicable to evaluating determinants, solving linear algebraic equations, inverting matrices, and determining characteristic equations without round-off error is being tested. The Illiac use and operation for the No… more

Calculated Equilibrium Constants for Metal-Oxygen Reactions in Molten Uranium Alloys

Description: The equilibrium constants for oxidation reactions occurring in molten U alloys are estimated from thermodynamic principles. Preliminary qualitative information was provided on: the relative ability of various elements to deoxidize U, and the relative stability of the oxide formed as a result. The latter will guide in the selection of oxides as possible crucible materials. Ideas were obtained on possible purification of U by melting. (M.H.R.)

Free-free gaunt factors

Description: The hydrogenic (unscreened coulomb) free-free gaunt factors are computed for a wide range of initial energies and photon frequencies. In addition, an average over initial energies with the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution is performed to give the temperatureaveraged gaunt factors for use in opacity calculations. These are presented as functions of Z/sup 2//kT and h nu /kT. The relation between these gaunt factors and the rate of bremsstrahlung energy production is given, as is the total energy em… more
