Transient Temperature Simulation of Reactor Primary Loop

Description: Report issued by the APDA over simulator studies conducted on their Developmental Fast Breeder Reactor. The simulator studies were "designed to predict both the normal and abnormal operating characteristics of the APDA Developmental Fast Breeder Reactor" (p. 1). This report includes tables, and illustrations.

Heat transfer burnout of Mark VIII fuel

Description: The operating conditions to which the special Mark VIII quatrefoils will be exposed during the proposed piloting program have been compared with the conditions required to cause burnout, using an established method of calculating these conditions. The results of this comparison permit the following conclusions to be drawn: (1) With normal flow of coolant through the special elements the heat flux to be encountered in the R-8 cycle (1400 MW) will be 70% or that required to cause burnout (30% mar… more

Enrico Fermi Fast Breeder Reactor Plant

Description: This report contains a description of the reactor plant portion of the Enrico Fermi Atomic Power Plant, with emphasis on the reactor system. Since this plant contains a developmental reactor, emphasis has been placed on reactor safety and on achieving reliable operation. The design is conservative and is flexible enough to permit incorporation of the results of developmental programs, which include nonnuclear, full-scale component test facility operations, and nuclear experiments, such as criti… more

RECOVERY OF ZIRCONIUM TETRACHLORIDE POWDER

Description: S>The Zircex Process for the recovery of zirconiuun from zirconium clad fuel elements is presented. Various types of apparatus were investigated for desublimation and collection of the solid zirconiuun tetrachloride. Of primary importance is the determination of particle size and distribution of the ZrCl/sub 4/ condensed for, in general, the larger and more uniform the particle size, the easier the collection. Observations of Stresses and Strains Near Intersections of Conical and Cylindrical Shells

Description: To test theory, models of the interaction of a conical and cylindrical shell, having three different apex angles in the cone and three different ratios of thickness to cylinder diameter, were subjected to internal hydrostatic pressure and the resulting strains at various points were measured. Careful studies were made of the unavoidable imperfections in the models. The results are in substantiai agreement with the Wenk-Taylor approximate theory described in TMB Report 826 and with the approxima… more

Mass Yields From Fission by Neutrons Between Thermal and 14.7 Mev

Description: Radiochemically determined mass-yield curves are given for the fission of U/sup 235/ and U/sup 238/ by l4.7-Mev neutrons. Symmetric and to a less extent, very asymmetric modes of fission are more probable at that energy than in thermal fission. Yields of four fission products from the fission of U/sup 235/ have been measured as a function of neutron energy in the range thermal to 14 Mev. The yields of eleven masses have been measured from the fission of Np/sup 237/ by degraded fission spectrum … more
