1-1/2-Loop Semiscale Isothermal Test Program: Program and System Description in Support of Experiment Data Reports.

Description: The isothermal test series is part of the Semiscale Blowdown and Emergency Core Cooling (ECC) Project conducted by Aerojet Nuclear Company for the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The test series consisted of ten blowdown tests and five hot-wall tests with emphasis on emergency core coolant delivery. The blowdown tests were conducted to investigate the effects of lower plenum geometry, heat transfer configuration, ECC injection location, downcomer gap size, and break size.

3-D slug flow heat transfer analysis of coupled coolant cells in finite LMFBR bundles

Description: A three-dimensional single region slug flow heat transfer analysis for finite LMFBR rod bundles using a classical analytical solution method has been performed. According to the isolated single cell analysis, the results show that the peripheral clad temperature variation as well as the thermal entrance length are strongly dependent upon the degree of irregularity displayed by various coolant geometries. Since under the present LMFBR conditions, fully-developed temperature fields may hardly be … more

Absolute differential cross sections over the entire angular range for the reaction /sup 3/H(d,n)/sup 4/He at 7. 0 and 10. 0 MeV

Description: Differential cross sections for the reaction /sup 3/H(d,n)/sup 4/He have been measured at 7.00 and 10.00 MeV using the time-of-flight technique. By measuring both /sup 3/H(d,n)/sup 4/He and /sup 2/H(t,n)/sup 4/He at the same center of mass, energy-complete distributions between 0/sup 0/ and 180/sup 0/ have been obtained. The absolute scales have been established within +- 1.5 percent by using the accurate /sup 2/H(t,/sup 4/He)n cross sections at 20.0 MeV as a standard.

Acceleration experienced by thermal converter implanted in calves. [Acceleration from walking, falling, and jumping]

Description: The objective of this study was to determine acceleration levels experienced by the ERDA thermal converter unit implanted abdominally in a calf. A full-scale weighted mock-up of the thermal converter was fabricated containing a triaxial accelerometer. The mock-up was implanted in calf cadavers which were subjected to falls from an operating table. Highest acceleration recorded was 34 g. The mock-up was implanted in living animals and acceleration measurements made under various maneuvers includ… more

Active Devices for High Temperature Microcircuitry

Description: As part of a program to develop high temperature electronics for geothermal well instrumentation, a number of solid state diode and transistor types were characterized from room temperature to 300/sup 0/C. The temperature dependence and aging stability of transport and leakage properties were measured. Included in the study were silicon diodes, bipolar transistors, JFETs, MOSFETs, and GaAs MESFETs and JFETs. In summary the results are: diodes and bipolar transistors became extremely leaky at hi… more

Adsorption of lead from liquid bismuth. [Time, temperature, and lead concentration effects]

Description: The possibility of low temperature absorption of lead from liquid bismuth is investigated. The effects of time, temperature, and the lead concentration in liquid bismuth on distribution of solute in solvent and adsorbent are studied. The results found can be used to study the feasibility of applying adsorption as a means of purifying liquid metals. (JFP)

Advanced automotive propulsion systems: incentive financing

Description: The purpose of this survey and study was to: review the available literature; contact developers, lending institutions, and other interested parties to determine their perceived need for Federal guarantees of financial obligations for AAPS research, development, demonstrations, and commercial availability; analyze the results; formulate conclusions; and make recommendations. A secondary purpose of the effort was to establish a dialogue with members of the automotive industry and the financial c… more

Advanced Thermohydraulic Simulation Code for Transients in LMFBRs (SSC-L code)

Description: Physical models for various processes that are encountered in preaccident and transient simulation of thermohydraulic transients in the entire liquid metal fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) plant are described in this report. A computer code, SSC-L, was written as a part of the Super System Code (SSC) development project for the "loop"-type designs of LMFBRs. This code has the self-starting capability, i.e., preaccident or steady-state calculations are performed internally. These results then serve … more

Air pollution effects on food quality. 2nd annual progress report

Description: Progress is reported in studies to determine the effect of acute, toxic exposures of ozone to alfalfa, potato, and soybean plants. The objective has been to correlate the foliar response with alterations in quality of the edible portion of the plant viz. the leaf, tuber and seed of alfalfa, potato and soybean, respectively. In 1977 we (1) modified our fumigation facilities, (2) developed protocol for studies with alfalfa and potato, and (3) conducted studies on flavonoid status of alfalfa and a… more

Analysis of a nuclear backscattering and reaction data by the method of convolution integrals. [BASS, in FORTRAN for IBM 360]

Description: A quantitative description of nuclear backscattering and reaction processes is made. Various formulas pertinent to nuclear microanalysis are assembled in a manner useful for experimental application. Convolution integrals relating profiles of atoms in a metal substrate to the nuclear reaction spectra obtained in the laboratory are described and computed. Energy straggling and multiple scattering are explicitly included and shown to be important. Examples of the application of the method to simp… more

Analysis of air distributor plates from atmospheric fluidized combustors: Rivesville and Alexandria

Description: Samples of perforated Type 310 stainless steel plates that were used as the air distributor grids for the Rivesville, West Virginia, and Alexandria, Virginia, atmospheric fluidized-bed combustors together with unexposed plate material were examined to determine the cause of cracking of the Rivesville plate. Intergranular cracks in the Rivesville plate are associated with massive sigma phase precipitates on grain boundaries. Both plates buckled during service, probably because of thermal stresse… more

Analysis of costs and scarce fuel savings associated with nine Eastern and North Central center city conversions to a district energy system

Description: This study considers the major urbanized areas of nine US cities to arrive at rough estimates of costs required to retrofit them with district energy systems (DES). Only those costs associated with heating and hot water are addressed here. Demand estimates and energy-supply analyses are made, and component capital costs are estimated to arrive at annualized system costs. Finally, a comparison of alternative energy-delivery options is made, and estimates of scarce-fuel savings are derived. 49 re… more
