Base Effects on the Thermal Decomposition of Sec-butyllithium Solutions

Description: The pyrolysis of sec-butyllithium in solution was studied in an attempt to understand the loss of stereo-specificity and the atypical kinetics that have been reported. Additionally, the effect of added lithium alkoxides was studied to determine their effects on the highly reactive sec-butyllithium substrate.

The Effects of Music and Operant Conditioning on Gross Motor Activity of Profound Mental Retardates

Description: It has not yet been demonstrated that music can be used therapeutically with profoundly retarded children. One way these children might be helped to respond to music, and therapeutically benefit from it, would be to use operant conditioning in an effort to enhance gross motor activity and then progressively shape responses until more complex behavior patterns are formed. Once these children can respond motorically in the presence of musical stimuli, continuation of responding may be possible by… more

Some Effects of X-Irradiaion on the Adrenal Response to Hypothalamic Stimulation in Rats

Description: Exactly where in the hypothalamus is the adrenal-pituitary response to X-irradiation "triggered" or initiated? Moreover, does ionizing radiation act directly on specific centers in the brain or does it act indirectly via the production of some humoral agents? Finally, what role does the hypothalamus play in the radiation-syndrome? The purpose of the present study was to attempt to answer these questions by determining the effects of two stressor agents, X-irradiation and electrical stimulation … more

Nuclear Spectroscopic Studies of Some Very Heavy Odd-Mass Nuclides

Description: The nuclear radiations of nuclides: U{sup 233}, Pu{sup 239}, Bk{sup 243}, Bk{sup 244}, Bk{sup 245}, Bk{sup 246}, Bk{sup 249}, Cf{sup 249}, and Fm{sup 255} were investigated with high-resolution spectrometers. The {alpha}-particle spectra of all nuclides except Bk{sup 249} were measured with 6 mm diameter surface-barrier detectors. Bk{sup 249} {alpha}-particles were analyzed with a double-focusing magnetic spectrograph. The {gamma}-singles were examined with the recently developed Ge(Li) and Si(… more

The Incidental Music of Beethoven

Description: This thesis explores the largely overlooked incidental music of Ludwig van Beethoven, composed for various stage plays between 1810 and 1822. While Beethoven is celebrated for his major works symphonies, sonatas, and quartets this study highlights his lesser-known compositions written for the theater, including music for Egmont, König Stephan, and Die Ruinen von Athen. It examines the historical background, performance history, publication status, and analytical structure of each piece. Using B… more

Pressure-Flow Relationships in the Isolated Cerebral Circulation of the Dog

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to determine the pressure-flow relationships in the isolated canine cerebral vascular bed. These relationships in vessels which supply an organ surrounded by bone are theoretically influenced by limiting factors which are not present in those vessels surrounded by soft tissue. An evaluation of the extent of these limitations is essential to thorough understanding of the dynamics of the cerebral vascular bed.

Teacher Judgments as Related to Certain Predictors of Artistic Creativity in Senior High-School Students

Description: The problem of this study was to ascertain the degree and kind of relation which might exist between a) certain measured indices of general creativity, ingenuity, and artistic judgment, and b) teacher judgments of artistic creativity within a senior high-school art population. One of the major purposes of this study was to identify a test or tests of creativity which might be used with senior high-school students to find those students with artistic potential who either should be counseled int… more

The Bracero Programs

Description: The bracero programs of the 1942-1964 period have been the subject of a large amount of controversy. One side insists that foreign workers are necessary to the production of the nation's food and fiber while the other is just as certain that native workers will do the work required when paid a reasonable wage. This thesis will attempt to explore the principal issues involved in the controversy.

Stylistic Analysis of "Banalités" by Francis Poulenc

Description: Because of the nature of the poetry, the interpretation of Banalites in this study has involved certain subjective decisions. These deductions were, nevertheless, colored by statements of the poet, the composer, and authorities on each. This is not to imply, however, that this is the only interpretation. Both poet and composer have given evidence that their creation requires a subjective response on the part of the interpreter. This is perhaps the greatest challenge offered by the work.

Differences in Personality Characteristics among Two Groups of Art Majors Varying in Creativity and a Control Group

Description: The present study is somewhat exploratory in nature in that it is interested in determining some of the factors which correlate with creativity. The study will limit itself to investigating the factors measured by Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire as they relate to creativity among high and low Creative art majors and non-art majors. To this end, it is hypothesized that a difference will be found among the mean scores of the three groups for at least thirteen of the sixteen fac… more

The Relationship between the Interaction of Two Anxiety Variables and Creative Production

Description: It is evident that educators and industrial psychologists alike recognize the effect that situational climate may have upon creative production. The present study will, hopefully, contribute some useful information leading to a better definition of the relationship between anxiety and creative production, which will lead in time to suggestions regarding the essential conditions of an optimum creative climate. The exploration of some of the aspects involved in situational climates is the point o… more

Heavy-Ion Elastic Scattering

Description: The elastic scattering of C/sup 12/ ions from Ar, Fe, Ni, Ag/sup 107/ In, and Ta was measured as a function of angle, at a laboratory-system energy of 124.5 Mev with the Berkeley heavy-ion linear accelerator. The experimental equipment and techniques are discussed. The angular distributions show the same general behavior as previous heavy-ion elastic scattering experiments. The experimental data were analyzed with the semiclassical Blair model as modified by McIntyre. Very good agreement with e… more
