Materials Approaches for Transparent Electronics

Description: This dissertation tested the hypothesis that energy transferred from a plasma or plume can be used to optimize the structure, chemistry, topography, optical and electrical properties of pulsed laser deposited and sputtered thin-films of ZnO, a-BOxNy, and few layer 2H-WS2 for transparent electronics devices fabricated without substrate heating or with low substrate heating. Thus, the approach would be compatible with low-temperature, flexible/bendable substrates. Proof of this concept was demons… more

First Principles Study of the Effect of Local Bonding on Diffusion Mechanisms in Alloys

Description: This work demonstrates how local, randomized tailoring of bond stiffness can affect the activation energy of diffusion in model alloys using density functional theory-based computations. This work is organized into two parts. The first part deals with the vacancy diffusion mechanism, and it compares the in–plane (IP) vs out-of-plane (OOP) diffusion paths in prototypical binary Mg-X (Ca, Y, and Gd) and ternary Mg-X (Ca, Y, and Gd)-Zn alloys. We examine how vacancy formation, migration, and solut… more

Investigating the Effects of Inhaled Diesel Exhaust Particles on Gut Microbiome, Intestinal Integrity, Systemic Inflammation, and Biomarkers of Cardiovascular Disease in Wildtype Mice

Description: We investigated the hypothesis that exposure to inhaled diesel exhaust PM can alter the gut microbiome and intestinal integrity, thereby promoting systemic inflammatory response and early CVD risk, which are exacerbated by HF diet. Furthermore, we investigated whether the observed exposure and diet-mediated outcomes could be mitigated through probiotic treatment. We performed an exposure study on C57Bl/6 male mice, placed on either a low fat (LF) diet or a high-fat (HF) diet, and exposed via or… more

Contradictory Attitudes towards Partisan Issues: Abortion and Gun Control

Description: In this study, I examine how self-reported religiosity predicts political opinion toward abortion and gun control. In particular, I examine how self-reported religiosity relates to individuals' inconsistent attitudes on these two issues where liberal attitudes are held toward one issue, but conservative attitudes are held toward the other. Most commonly, these inconsistent attitudes are found among individuals who hold pro-life (conservative) and pro-gun control (liberal) views. Using data from… more

Nontraditional Six-Four Chords and Their Impact on Middleground Structures in Schumann, Brahms, and Saint-Säens

Description: This dissertation explores middleground functionality of six-four chords by combining a voice-leading approach with hypermetrical analysis. By acknowledging the functional ambiguity of certain six-four chords that do not fit into traditional classifications (Aldwell and Schachter's cadential, consonant, passing, and neighboring six-four), or that can be seen as fitting in more than one category, I show that our interpretation of deeper-level structures is contingent upon how we choose to hear t… more

The Impact of Immigrant-Focused Public Policy on the Completion of Undergraduate Nursing Degrees by Latinx Students Enrolled in U.S. Public Institutions

Description: This study was the first to examine the impact of immigrant-focused public policy on the educational outcomes of Latinx students in professional nursing. Between 2001-2020, 34 states adopted policies that either provided or prohibited in-state resident tuition (ISRT) and/or state financial aid (SFA) to undocumented students. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act (DACA) passed in 2012 gave a new group of largely Latinx, college-age immigrants unprecedented access to public higher education … more

Advanced Cathodes for High Energy Density Lithium Sulfur Battery

Description: A systematic development of 2D alloy catalyst with synergistic performance of high lithium polysulfide (LiPS) binding energy and efficient Li+ ion/electron conduction is presented. The first section of work found that Li+ ions can flow through the percolated ion transport pathway in polycrystalline MoS2, while Na+ and K+ ions can easily flow through the percolated 1D ion channel near the grain boundaries. An unusually high ionic conductivity of extrinsic Li+, Na+, and K+ ions in 2D MoS2 film ex… more

Counting Plane Tropical Curves via Lattice Paths in Polygons

Description: A projective plane tropical curve is a proper immersion of a graph into the real Cartesian plane subject to some conditions such as that the images of all the edges must be lines with rational slopes. Two important combinatorial invariants of a projective plane tropical curve are its degree, d, and genus g. First, we explore Gathmann and Markwig's approach to the study of the moduli spaces of such curves and explain their proof that the number of projective plane tropical curves, counting mult… more
