Female Inheritors of Hawthorne's New England Literary Tradition

Description: Nineteenth-century women were a mainstay in the New England literary tradition, both as readers and authors. Indeed, women were a large part of a growing reading public, a public that distanced itself from Puritanism and developed an appetite for novels and magazine short stories. It was a culture that survived in spite of patriarchal domination of the female in social and literary status. This dissertation is a study of selected works from Nathaniel Hawthorne, Sarah Orne Jewett, and Mary E. Wi… more

AIDS and Aging: Are the Eldery Becoming the New At-Risk Population?

Description: This dissertation breaks new ground. It examines the perceptions of older adults towards AIDS prevention. Using the National Health Interview Survey, 1988: AIDS Knowledge and Attitudes Supplement, a modified Health Belief Model is developed. Despite the low number of older adults 55+ with AIDS, some extenuating circumstances increase their risk of AIDS contraction. Older adults have lower levels of knowledge about AIDS, weaker immune systems and receive more blood transfusions. Societal influen… more

Diverse Works

Description: The goal of the work was to infect traditional ideas of beauty and authority with late Twentieth-Century culture and to thereby create an artifact that would reflect the multiplicity of our culture. My work, to date, has dealt with single works of a consistent media combining two and three-dimensional elements. I proposed to add to the complexity of my stated goal through a more varied use of medium; audio, photography, lighting, paint on canvas, reprocessed found objects as well as materials w… more

Thermochemical decomposition and isomerization of polysilacyclodialkynes and thermochemical and photochemical decomposition of cyclopolysilylketenes

Description: Kinetic data for elimination of silylene supports formation of a ``tighter`` transition state, indicating a silacyclopropene intermediate. This extends the silacyclopropene mechanism to the cyclicdialkyne system and validates the consistency of the mechanism for silylakynes, in general. Investigation into the other possible silacyclopropene product established the instability of the product. The work with silylketenes proved that an inherent difference exists between reactivity of monosilyl-sub… more

Study of radicals, clusters and transition state species by anion photoelectron spectroscopy

Description: Free radicals, elemental and van der Waals clusters and transition state species for bimolecular chemical reactions are investigated using anion photoelectron spectroscopy. Several low-lying electronic states of ozone have been identified via photoelectron spectroscopy of O{sub 3}{sup {minus}}. A characterization of these states is important to models for atmospheric ozone reaction kinetics. The fluoroformyloxyl radical, FCO{sub 2}, has been investigated, providing vibrational frequencies and e… more

Personal and Universal Imagery: Prehistory and the Future

Description: I wished to explore ways to introduce my futuristic symbols in my work that have a relevant universality, support a primordial mysticism, and maintain a personal spirituality. This would be achieved by utilizing imagery with both contemporary and futuristic connotations. This type of imagery would require specific sculptural techniques more refined than was previously present in my work. The sculpture would consist of solitary, tensely postured, monumental figures composed according to a classi… more

Measurement of magnetic turbulence structure and nonlinear mode coupling of tearing fluctuations in the Madison Symmetric Torus reversed field pinch edge

Description: Linear and nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability of current-driven modes are studied in the MST reversed field pinch. Measured low frequency (f < 35 kHz) magnetic fluctuations are consistent with the global resistive tearing instabilities predicted by 3-D MHD simulations. At frequencies above 35 kHz, the magnetic fluctuations were detected to be localized and externally resonant. Discrete dynamo events, ``sawtooth oscillations,`` have been observed in the experimental RFP plasmas. This … more
