Single crystalline elastic constants of the MgCu/sub 2/-MgZn/sub 2/ system

Description: The adiabatic single crystalline elastic constants of six Mg(Cu, Zn)/sub 2/ cubic Laves phases have been determined by the ultrasonic pulse-echo technique over the compositional range 10 to 50 mol % MgZn/sub 2/ and over the temperature range 4.2 to 300/sup 0/K. In addition the elastic constants of the hexagonal MgZn/sub 2/ Laves phase were measured as a function of temperature. A minimum exists in the compositional dependence of the cubic Mg(Cu, Zn)/sub 2/ phase at 20 mol % MgZn/sub 2/ for all three directly measured values and the anisotropy ratio shows a maximum at the same composition. These phenomena may be related to the fact that their Fermi surface touches the (311) faces of the Brillouin zones at this composition. The various energy contributions to the elastic shear constants were considered and it was concluded that the Fermi energy has to be included to achieve satisfactory agreement between the calculated and measured elastic constants. The Debye temperatures were calculated and were found to decrease at low zinc contents and then increase at compositions above 20 mol % MgZn/sub 2/ for the cubic Mg(Cu, Zn)/sub 2/ phase. The initial decrease is probably due to the substitution of the heavier zinc atoms for the copper atoms and the increase above 20 % MgZn/sub 2/ is probably due to an increase in the interatomic force constants.

The Effectiveness of Denton State School's Developmental Evaluation Form in Evaluating an Operant Training Program for Severely Retarded Boys

Description: The problem of this study was to evaluate Denton State School's Developmental Evaluation Form as it is now being used in their operant conditioning techniques in certain basic self-help areas, and to suggest a more effective and informative method of scoring the Evaluation Form. The present method of scoring this evaluation form requires that -all items at each developmental level be passed in order to receive credit for that level. No partial credit is given at any level. This method of scoring yields a developmental level at which. the individual is functioning. It does not, however, point out the total overall development of the individual. The present type of basal developmental scoring is not as discriminating as far as picturing an individual's total development as the one which will be suggested.

Clavecin Pieces of Louis Couperin

Description: Louis Couperin (c. 1626-1661) was an outstanding member of the seventeenth-century clavecin school and an important link in the Couperin dynasty. His works for the harpsichord, or clavecin, have been neglected. This is due primarily to the fact that there are relatively few of his works, in comparison with those of his nephew, Franois Couperin Le Grand, who greatly overshadows him. Louis wrote no treatise on how his works are to be played, and there are few accounts of him, or his works, that are written in English. There is no biography of Louis Couperin. A more detailed study should be made of his music and its place in the French clavecin literature. Before examiinig the music itself, however, it is necessary to trace the origins and development of the clavecin school and its style.

First-Person Narration in Edgar Allan Poe's Tales

Description: For the purpose of this study, Poe's tales were read and considered carefully in chronological order, the idea being to discover growth and development. Poe's literary career was relatively brief (1832-1849), and there are no dramatic or definite breaks or periods. Though his production shows growth in sophistication and artistry, it has been deemed more instructive to group Poets first-person narrators according to the part they play in the story, that is, (1) main actor or protagonist, (2) minor character, (3) observers and (4) combinations of the foregoing three. An attempt will be made to note both variation and pattern, and hence artistic skill, in Poe Is handling of each particular type of narrator.

The Effects of Memory Load on the Accuracy of Recognition of Stimuli

Description: The purpose of this study was to find if memory load significantly affects the performance of the subjects in the before condition of a before versus after technique experiment. In order to accomplish this the alternatives were presented either before or after the stimulus, with the alternatives and stimuli being either of high-complexity or low-complexity.

Aesthetics in the Popular Culture

Description: The purpose of this thesis is to consider three opposing statements regarding aesthetics in our popular culture. The first statement is that the youth of this age are demolishing the old standards of aesthetic taste and are creating a nonaesthetic; the second statement is that the youth are enlarging the vision and scope of the accepted standard of aesthetic and changing its direction; the thrid statement is that the creations of the youth in our popular culture of today are neither new nor nonaesthetic, but merely a continuation of aesthetics as they are accepted. One statement will be chosen as the most valid of the three.

Continuous Solutions of Laplace's Equation in Two Variables

Description: In mathematical physics, Laplace's equation plays an especially significant role. It is fundamental to the solution of problems in electrostatics, thermodynamics, potential theory and other branches of mathematical physics. It is for this reason that this investigation concerns the development of some general properties of continuous solutions of this equation.

Principles and Application of Numerically Controlled Machines

Description: The purpose of this study is threefold. First, numerical control will be analyzed objectively to ascertain its justification in terms of meeting the requirements of the basic manufacturing process phases. Secondly, the study will consist of an evaluation of the field of industrial arts in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to determine how numerical control has been accepted in the educational field and what preparation, if any, is being made to include the teaching of this new industrial concept. Thirdly, the study will investigate the feasibility and cost of installing numerically controlled equipment in the industrial arts laboratories of North Texas State University.

Self-Concept and Dogmatism as Variables in the Prediction of Internal-External Reward Expectancies

Description: The problem of this study was to determine the relationship between the nature of an individual's self-concept and belief system to his orientation toward internal versus external control of reinforcement. This study was designed to investigate the relationship of two variables, self-concept and open versus closed belief system, to a third variable, locus of control.

The Relationship between Fear and Stereotyped versus Non-Stereotyped Tasks

Description: The exact properties of the interaction between emotional drives and other psychological phenomena is still a vastly unexplored field. The purpose of this paper will be to examine further the effects of one of these emotional drives, that of fear, on task performance, and to explore some of the theoretical conceptualizations already put forth regarding this interaction.

The Relationship of Expectancy of Success to Objective Probability and Consequences of Performance

Description: The work reviews a article published by N. T. Feather about five approaches which relate to the analysis of behavior in a choice situation where a decision is made between alternatives having different subjective probabilities of attainment. The relationship between choice potential and success probability is affect by the type of situation in which the choice is made.

A Bacteriological Survey of a Freshwater Reservoir

Description: In this study organisms that can be subcultured from lake water, using a prescribed procedure, limit, to an extent, the population, or portions of the population, that can be monitored. In essence, what is taking place is that a set of conditions is set forth and a study is made of the bacteria that will grow under these prescribed conditions.
