Strange-Particle Production by 1170-MeV/c pi- Mesons

Description: Production of {Lambda} + K{sup 0}, {Sigma}{sup 0} + K{sup 0}, and {Sigma}{sup -} + K{sup +} by 1170-MeV/c {pi}{sup -} mesons has been studied in the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory 72-inch hydrogen bubble chamber, Cross sections, angular distributions, and polarizations are presented. The polarization of the {Sigma}{sup 0} is determined at four center-of-mass angles and found to be small everywhere. Based on published results for the reaction {pi}{sup +} + p {yields} {Sigma}{sup +}, K{sup +}, a c… more

Monte Carlo Calculations on Intranuclear Cascades

Description: The basic assumption of the Serber model in the description of high- energy nuclear reactions is that the interactions of incident particles with complex nuclei can be described in terms of individual particle-particle collisions within the nucleus. Calculations were performed making use of the basic assumption of the Serber model, a more realistic nuclear model, recent cross-section data, and an exact statistical sampling technique. The sampling technique has not been used previously in calcul… more

I. THE THEORY OF ABERRATIONS OF QUADRUPOLE FOCUSING ARRAYS. II. ION OPTICAL DESIGN OF HIGH QUALITY EXTRACTED SYNCHROTRON BEAMS WITH APPLICATION TO THE BEVATRON

Description: In Part One they formulate in a general way the problem of analyzing and evaluating the aberrations of quadrupole magnet beam systems, and of characterizing the shapes and other properties of the beam envelopes in the neighborhood of foci. They consider all aberrations, including those due to misalignments and faulty construction, through third order in small parameters, for quadrupole beam systems. One result of this study is the development of analytic and numerical techniques for treating th… more

A Comparison of Scores Made on the MMPI and CTMM by Two Groups of Juvenile Delinquents Apprehended for Auto Theft and a Group of Non-Delinquents

Description: The problem of this study was to determine if juvenile delinquents who commit auto theft without an accomplice differ significantly in certain characteristics from those who commit such thefts with one of more confederates. The characteristics investigated were: (1) scores made on individual scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and (2) intellectual ability as measured by the California Short-Form Test of Mental Maturity. Furthermore, the same characteristics were examined t… more

The Conscience of Macbeth

Description: Whatever are the other merits of Macbeth, it must be classed as one of the most penetrating studies of conscience in literature. Shakespeare does not attempt to describe in the drama how the ordinary criminal would react to evil, but how Shakespeare himself would have felt if he had fallen into crime. 1 The ramifications of this conflict between the conscience of a man of genius and the supernatural forces of wickedness, therefore, assume immense dimensions. "Macbeth leaves on most readers a pr… more

A Development of the Peano Postulates

Description: The purpose of this paper is to develop the Peano postulates from a weaker axiom system than the system used by John L. Kelley in General Topology. The axiom of regularity which states "If X is a non-empty set, then there is a member Y of X such that the intersection of X and Y is empty." is not assumed in this thesis. The axiom of amalgamation which states "If X is a set, then the union of the elements of X is a set." is also not assumed. All other axioms used by Kelley relevant to the Peano p… more

England and the International Monetary System of the Nineteenth Century

Description: There were two international standards in the nineteenth century, the theoretical gold standard and the historical sterling standard. The primary interest of this thesis is the latter, although the theoretical framework of the gold standard will also be examined. Because of its role in the London money market, particular attention will be given to the Bank of England. Since the Bank and the international standards were products of the evolutionary and revolutionary changes which occurred in Bri… more
