Pashanti (Les 9 Milliards de Noms de Dieu)

Description: Recording of David Evan Jones's "Pashanti (Les 9 Milliards de Noms de Dieu)." "Pashanti" is a Sanskrit word that refers to the level of thought that immediately predicts the recognition of speech as sound. This composition uses a hybrid computer musical system to filter vowel sound sources and vowel-like sounds. The text consists of the vowels i / a / u / e / i in sequence with particular transition velocities form the word "Yaweh" (the name of the Hebrew god). This series of vowels is continuously permuted to form the text of Pashanti through the composition.

Relazioni-trasformazioni

Description: Recording of Albert Mayr's Relazioni-transformazioni. “Relationships-Transformations” is part of a series of works that are based on the TIME-ASPECTS text and thus start from the same basic hypothesis: highlighting the relationships that come into being between various sound events - or even visual, theatrical – in function of relationships between their organizations in time and subjective transformations - of such events that occur during the operation. This hypothesis is carried on with the use of a very small material, both for recorded and instrumental parts, without any virtuosity, even to avoid masking, with affirmative artisans, the state of erosion of making music today.

Six fantaiseies on a poem by Thomas Campion

Description: Recording of Paul Lansky's "Six fantasies on a poem by Thomas Campion" performed by Hannah Mackey. It is a suite of computer synthesized studies of the reading of the poem "Sweet-cheeked Laura" by Thomas Campion. In this work, Lansky takes a single text, which was then read by his wife and frequent collaborator Hannah Mackay, and subjected it to a variety of aural manipulations. Each of the studies attempts to explicate different implicit musical aspects of the sound of speech. The effect of the different approaches should be to change the listener's perception and application of the musical senses of speech, particularly poetry reading.

Renascence

Description: Recording of Jonathan Kramer's Renascence. This piece uses clarinet, tape delay system, and mixer to create a continuous melody with interspersed counter-melodies. The texture eventually becomes so dense that individual lines cannot be distinguished. The title refers to both a poem of the same title by Edna St. Vincent Millay and the rebirth of continuity from fragmentation within the piece.

Samarkandko

Description: Recording of Peter Tod Lewis's Samarkandko. This piece is a linear construction on five highly contrasted sources. The affective associations of the materials may suggest a dramatic scenario which, though ambiguous, contradictory, subjective, guided the order on event presentations and their manner of juxtaposition. One evolved theory of the work had precisely to do with the use of extreme, and perhaps at first seemingly unrelated, contrast that such materials can, with care and sensitivity, work together in a composition, to see in the end, related, if only now to the whole. Samarkandko was realized in October of 1976 in the Electronic Music Studios of the University of Iowa.

Satumaisema

Description: Recording of Marja Vesterinen's Satumaisema ("Fairy-tale Landscape") performed by Marja Vesterinen. The piece begins with an image of empty space with strange unknown planets passing over the observer. A raw chord, formed from the interval of the third and produced with the aid of amplitude modulation, symbolizes the friction against the outer atmosphere as the traveler reaches the vicinity of the fairy-tale planet. From beneath the layer of misty clouds is revealed a beautiful land of sweetness and verdure.

Ripsnorter

These materials were treated in the style of a classic rondo with three themes that were then interwoven for compositional purposes. The contrasting central part consists of an assembly of sounds. At the end of the work, there appears a recitation of a child related to the title and the subject.

Rupestre en el futuro

Description: Recording of Joaquin Orellana's "Rupestre en el futuro" for tape. Extra-musically, the piece is a "testimony of place" in a surrealist picture of a social situation, namely, the development of humans.
