Walkabout

Description: Recording of Paul Koonce's Walkabout. For pre-recorded sound and electronics. The goal behind this has been to explore ways in which more conventional sounds and idioms can be re-introduced through engagement with the musical associations of the environment and its places. This work continues the sentiment of this exploration with a work focused less on the environment than the juxtaposition and threading of musical styles.

Ta Ba Ma

Description: Recording of Magdalena Dlugosz's Ta Ba Ma. This composition was influenced by an earlier work TaBAr for double bass and tape and juxtaposes two forms of musical expression: the dynamic performance of classical music and the playback of a closed tape recording. The composer wrote the instrumental part for Tadeusz Wielecki, a Polish double bass player and composer.

Acousmaclarine

Description: Recording of Jean-Louis Poliart's Acousmaclarine. This work consists of two recordings: one of the electronic tape only, the other of the electronic tape and bass clarinet performance on top. This work is a counterpart to the 1980's piece "Contrephase" and has an opposite approach to the relationship between the electroacoustic montage and clarinetist.

Resonant black

Description: Recording of Shintaro Imai's Resonant black. This piece consists of three sections with the motives "stir", "meditation", and "thinking". This work was written for Japanese singer, Atsushi Okamoto and was created using his baritone voice and a live computer system. The system is used to process real-time audio signals which expands both the singer's performance and the computer's generated sound. The work premiered at Nikkei Hall, Tokyo, Japan as part of the SonicArt '99 concert.

Voicewind

Description: Recording of Robert Andrew Mackay's Voicewind. The composer based this work on a piece of text from "Oedipus at Colonus" by Sophocles, which itself is spoken within the piece. The material included also relates to the Greek ideals of music, set in place by Boethius.

Kol ha torr

Description: Recording of Rajmil Fischman's Kol ha torr. This work was written to celebrate the birth of the composer's son, the sounds within the piece originating from recordings made when he was 2-6 months old. The composer has segmented the work into 7 sections, with various subsections within each one based on perceived energy levels and musical differences.

Evocations I

Description: Recording of José R. Sosaya Wekselman's Evocations I. This work is made up of various acoustical sounds all attributed to the environment of the composer when creating this piece. This includes family voices, airports, domestic sounds, etc. The composer has meant for these sounds to create their own evolutionary musical structure rather than be heavily manipulated. He thanks the Spanish Ministry of Culture for their grant which helped this piece come to fruition.

Description: Recording of Elizabeth Anderson's Chat noir. This piece is the second work in a cycle of recordings based on the book "Owning Your Own Shadow - Understanding the Dark Side of the Psyche" by Robert A. Johnson. "Chat Noir" explores the paradox of opposition in the psychological reality of mankind. This work was created with the support of the ministry of the French speaking community in Belgium and is registered at S.A.C.E.M.

Camello

Description: Recording of Rubén Hinojosa Chapel and Bérengère de Tarlé's Camello. This work tells an imaginary story by taking elements from real life including the sounds of public transportation in Havana. It is a soundscape of a part of the daily life in Havana. The composer points to the importance of the words in the piece from people speaking and public announcements as it holds symbolism for the Cuban people. This work premiered at the "XIII Festival de La Habana de Música Contemporánea".

Thrum

Description: Recording of John Gibson's Thrum. This is an electroacoustic piece that revolves around a wide range of sounds played on an acoustic guitar. Many of the guitar textures were created by a virtual player that read short guitar samples and created a pulsed repetitive texture. The composer's aim was to create music that balances human qualities against the regularity of machines.
