La Mort de Roland

Description: In 1985 the School of Music at the University of Auckland bought a Yamaha DX7 synthesiser. New to the musical world at the time, this machine made computer synthesis by frequency modulation available on a portable keyboard, and rapidly became one of the most popular synthesisers to be used by all sorts of musicians. In our studio at the time our main synthesiser was the modular analogue Roland System 700, many of whose functions were to be usurped by the newcomer with its MIDI capabilities. Th… more

Music for Viola, Cello, and Tape

Description: Music for Viola, Cello, and Tape was written and premiered in Paris in 1985. This work brings together two extremely different aspects of my musical experience: improvisational music and music involving computers. These two musical domains, representing intuition and rationale - opposites yet complements - hold a great deal of interest for me. This trio explores the interactions among three soloists, one being a tape of computer-generated sounds; in which no part plays a secondary role. The two… more

Mutacion II

Description: The basic idea of the piece consists of transformations of various sound structures made of periodic rhythms and delimited heights and others built with "free" rhythms and preferentially undetermined heights. From the middle of the room and then one of these variable-pitch and indeterminate sound structures takes on importance and on the end supports development. This criterion between fixed and indeterminate pulsation and height is also followed in the spatial organization. Several sound struc… more

Next pièce no. 1

Description: This piece was made at the IPEM studios in Ghent on November 1985. This work has a clear and noticeable construction, based on the proportion 2:3:5. The total duration is divided into three parts according to this proportion: the parts' durations are 3', 2', and 3'. These parts are subdivided according the same proportions, taking into account the possible symmetries starting from 2:3:5. The sounds used are similar: each sound is deduced from the original sound. The sounds are placed in polypho… more

Ogni Pensiero Vola

Description: The starting point of the piece was given by the visit of the "Monsters Park", a grotesque sculpture garden near Viterbo in Italy that was created at the end of the sixteenth century by Pier Francesco Orsini, Duke of Bomarzo. The title of the piece is an inscription engraved on one of the sculptures, a giant monster head with a gaping mouth that is known as "the mouth of the devil" or "the dragon". The inscription seems in resonance with its meaning in a mysterious, inexplicable way and the wor… more

One for the Ladies – Unicorns-Magicats-Lovers

Description: There were several ladies involved with this work: My second daughter was born during its composition and my first daughter introduced me to the Unicorns and Magicats which compromise the first two sections of the work. Each of the three overlapping sections: Unicorns, Magicats and Lovers, were all pictured in my mind and feminine in nature. The composition makes use of an abundance of female "voice-like" timbres and lastly, but most important, the work is composed for and dedicated to the danc… more

The Other Shape

Description: The Other Shape is largely based on contradictions. Between the short and the long, for example. The short sound and the resonant. The dry and the reverberated, or the lengthened. The continuity of silence or holding, opposed to the brutal and ephemeral explosion of percussive sounds. As in many other plays, this dialectic has led me to a typically segmented and punctuated, simple and bare form. For its realization, I had recourse to many programs of composition, acting either at the level of … more

Là où Mène le Monde...

Description: The initial idea was to make a piece only on and through Fairlight, via the Musice Composer Language (MCL). He had, indeed, just made his appearance in the studio. So I hung my feet, like many others, in the whole process of learning, from the linguistic difference of the instruction books to the time of experimentation or "taming". He had finally seriously amputated my bank of studio hours, and I had only three minutes of realized ... the machine had me: Well disappointed, to reorient the shot… more

Page 16

Description: The work was originally composed as part of a large musical project "Soundscape" (soundscape) for the exhibition "Music" at the Noorköping Art Museum in 1982. The exhibition occupied five galleries and included paintings from a number of artists who had been inspired by the music. Some of them started with general impressions of music, others described specific works from Mozart to Coltrane and Glass, and others have done their work by applying musical systems. Some artists like Arnold Schoenbe… more

Palimpsest

Description: "Sound recycling" would be the perfect term for Gerald Trimmel's composition cycle called "Palimpsest". When Trimmel performed his first "Palimpsest" in 1985, he did not consider this work as a final result. The following compositions were characterized by various procedures of sound accumulations and structural rearrangements. A lot of acoustic ready mades and complex structured sound elements were inserted, which first covered up and by and by extinguished the older ones. So the shrinkin… more

Paysages PC

Description: If the music of the past was characterized by the contest between consonance and dissonance, the music of the present day is a contest between sound and noise. This percussion piece is located precisely in this intermedia area. The instrumentation is largely metallic, centering on gongs (Ching, Tching Lwo, Feng Lwo etc.) completed by a marimba. Structurally the piece develops from points (isolated, in varying density) by way of lines (aleatory distribution of glissando cymbals) to a surface. Th… more
