In 1985 the School of Music at the University of Auckland bought a Yamaha DX7 synthesiser. New to the musical world at the time, this machine made computer synthesis by frequency modulation available on a portable keyboard, and rapidly became one of the most popular synthesisers to be used by all sorts of musicians. In our studio at the time our main synthesiser was the modular analogue Roland System 700, many of whose functions were to be usurped by the newcomer with its MIDI capabilities.
