Recent developments in delay line readout of multiwire proportional chambers

Description: From nuclear science symposinm; San Francisco, California, USA (14 Nov 1973). The application of electromagnetic delay line readout methods for determining the track positions of ionizing particles in multiwire proportional chambers is described. Construction techniques for large area chambers, which allow the use of all three planes for track position measurements are given. The construction and characteristics of electromagnetic delay lines optimized for wire chamber readout are discussed. (auth)

Thermodynamic properties of solid solutions at high temperatures

Description: The research carried out under this cortract was concerned with the determination of thermodynamic properties of inorganic matenials at high temperatures. Experimental methods were developed which permit accurate and reliable determination of activity-composition relations in solid solutions, and stabilities of end-member compounds. The data provide insight irto the general laws governing the behavior of materials in high-temperature envirorments. The phases selected for the experimental studies include onthosilicates, metasilicates, oxides of periclase structure, spinels, and titarates. It has been shown that directions of conjugation lines between coexisting solid-solution phases provide a powerful tool for determnining relative stabilities of endmember compounds and activity-composition relations of solid solutions. In general, oxide phases (including silicates and titanates) forming complete solid-solution series at high temperatures show less deviations from ideality in their activity- composition relations than do alloy systems. Deviations from ideality are particularly small for many solid solutions of relatively simple structures (e.g. oxides of peniclase structure), whereas those of greater structural complexities (e.g. spinels) show larger deviations from ideality. Microscopic theory for the fluctuation-driven phase transition in weak itinerant magnets

Description: From 19th conference on magnetism and magnetic materials; Boston, Massachusetts, USA (13 Nov 1973). The microscopic basis for a recent phenomenological theory -for the thermodynamics near T/sub c/ of weak itinerant magnets is presented. Calculation of dynamic renormalization effects within paramagnon theory justifies the previous assumption of weakly temperature dependent Ginsburg- Landau alpha and BETA coefficients. The cutoff on the fluctuation phase space is found to go as q/sub m/= ~ (T/sub c/)/sup 1/3/ rather than the usual inverse coherence length. In spite of the phase space reduction, as T/sub c/ yields -- 0, the phenomenological description becomes exact in a temperature region of order T/sub c/. However, it is found that the alpha and BETA coefficients must be determined phenomenologically since no small parameter enters the calculation of their overall magnitude. (auth)

Mechanism of liquid--liquid contact and heat transfer related to fuel- coolant interactions

Description: BS>From second specialist meeting on sodium fuel interaction in fast reactors; Ispra-- Varese, Italy (21 Nov 1973). The requirements for explosive boiling (vapor explosion) are discussed with special emphasis on the UO/sub 2/-Na system. Considerations include requirements for direct liquid-liquid contact and associated heat transfer characteristics. Fragmentation and explosive boiling are treated as separate phenomena. (auth)

Natural – Cultural

Description: This was conceived in 1973 and finalized in this form in 1983 (at Electroacoustic Music Studious from Gent and Bucharest). In 1985 it received the International Confederation of Electroacoustic Music (C.I M.E.) prize. Natural – Cultural is a spectral archetypal music. It suggests the Bib Bang, the initial Explosion, the Cosmic Birth of Universe (of Galaxies), of Nature, the Creation Moments in 6 biblical days, the appearance of the 4 existing kingdoms: mineral, vegetal, animal (insects, birds, animals) and human. This process develops on an egg spiral (archetypal form) which begins on central sound G (the 6-th harmonic) in a c o n t i n u o u s evolution to acute and deep searching for acute E (the 80-th harmonic) and deep D, the FUNDAMENTAL sound. We witness the growth of a “sonorous tree”, the “life tree”, the Archetype of the archetypes, which yields till the end (in the 7-th day), cultural “fruits”, a s c e n d a n t melodies played by a piano. This work will be broadcasted into vast spaces (wit many loudspeakers), as ambient music, on the top of a mounting or at see shore, or inside an astronomic observer at sunrise or sunset.

Studie 7b

Description: Recording of Lucien Goethals's Studie 7b. Six groups of 24 frequencies, chosen in the temperate system, undergo 12 transformations of amplitude and duration. The succession of the 72 variants of the basic groups is determined by the random element of the programmer, by means of which this study was carried out. During the realization, the multiple possibilities of this programmer contributed significantly to enrich the sound result. The composer decided to make the distinction between the compositional plan, called "Study VIIa", and the new version, resulting from the production.

Ready made

Description: Recording of Eugeniusz Rudnik's Ready made. This piece is a palette of different sounds arranged differently. In the years 1970-72 I had collected various sounds, mainly short episodes [4-5 sec.], recorded on a magnetic tape. The decision as to which were the best acoustic events worthy of re-use was based on their contrast with usual sounds. The second criterion of choice was based on links between the recording studio's history and own music. According to these principles, I assembled more or less 2 hours of the musical material, which was selected after several times and organized in order to build the whole of this piece. The event is exposed in the time necessary to the human perception of its invoice and afterward should disappear, to leave its place for another. Nothing is taken again. It's a collage without quotes. The whole piece could be summed up in one sentence: "The purpose of all this being to approach sea fish to the mountain regions.” The rustling is conceived in a form of pastiche to mimic the style of certain pieces composed in the early days of electronic music. "Ready made" (the title) is a term created by Dadaists, describing non-artistic objects, which nevertheless become quite artistic by the simple effect of having chosen and used them.

Calculation of resonance self shielding in $sup 235$U

Description: Analytic and Monte Carlo calculations of the Bramblett- Czirr /sup 235/U transmission experiment STANuc!. Sci. Eng. 35, 350-357 (1969)! were performed. The numbcr of fissions from the uncollided flux could be calculated as a function of depth. The results of experiment and Monte Carlo calculations are tabulated and plotted; fission and total cross sections for /sup 235/U are shown. In view of the agreement between the analytic and Monte Carlo calculations, it appeared that the ENDF/B-III cross sections were inadequate to calculate the Czirr-- Bramblett experiment.
