High-power vacuum window in WR10

Description: Results are presented for fabrication and test of a WR10 waveguide window, for use in ultra-high vacuum at 91.4 GHz. Low-power bench measurements are compared with analytic and simulation results. Operation at approximately equal to 4-kW peak power, duty factor 10{sup {minus}6} and 10{sup {minus}9}-scale vacuum is noted.

Multi-Bunch Instability Diagnostics via Digital Feedback Systems at PEP-II, DAFNE, ALS and SPEAR

Description: Longitudinal feedback systems based on a common programmable DSP architecture have been commissioned at 4 laboratories. In addition to longitudinal feedback and beam diagnostics these flexible systems have been programmed to provide diagnostics for transverse motion. The diagnostic functions are based on transient domain techniques which record the response of every bunch while the feedback system manipulates the beam. Operational experience from 4 installations is illustrated via experimental … more

A Study of the Relationship of Geological Formation to the NORM

Description: Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) is a common and costly contaminant of produced waters associated with natural gas production and exploration. One way of combating this problem is by identifying the problem beforehand. Our approach to this problem involves development of NORM prediction capabilities based on the geological environment. During the tenth quarter of this project, emphasis again remained on two major tasks; identifying new sampling sites and seeking approval for fin… more

Electrical resistivity measurements of brine saturated porous media near reservoir conditions: Awibengkok preliminary results

Description: Laboratory measurements of the electrical resistivity of rocks and synthetic rocks with confining pressures up to 100 bars and temperatures between 20 and 211 C were performed to further investigate how the pore-size distribution and capillarity affects boiling in porous media. Similar to previous measurements on samples from The Geysers, CA, we observed a gradual increase in resistivity when pore pressure was decreased below the phase-boundary pressure of free water, an indication that boiling… more

Environmental and Economic Assessment of Discharges from Gulf of Mexico Region Oil and Gas Operations

Description: The primary objectives of the project are to increase the base of scientific knowledge concerning (1) the fate and environmental effects of organics, trace metals, and NORM in water, sediment, and biota near several offshore oil and gas facilities; (2) the characteristics of produced water and produced sand discharges as they pertain to organics, trace metals, and NORM variably found in association with the discharges; (3) the recovery of three terminated produced water discharge sites located … more

Laser damage of dichroic coatings in a high average power laser vacuum resonator

Description: In our application, dichroics in a high average power, near-infrared, laser system have short operating lifetimes. These dichroics were used as the resonator fold mirrors and permitted the transmission of the pumping argon (Ar) ion laser light. Representative samples of two different dichroic optics were taken off-line and the transmission performance monitored in various scenarios. Irradiating these optics under resonator vacuum conditions, ({le}1 mT, 11.7 kW/cm{sup 2}, Ar laser running all wa… more

Hartree-Fock Mean-Field Models Using Separable Interactions

Description: An effective two-body nuclear interaction is presented which is a sum of terms separable in coordinate space. Calculations are made using this interaction of some doubly closed-shell spherical nuclei using many-body perturbation theory with the Hartree-Fock state as a reference state. It is demonstrated that the interaction gives good bulk properties in finite nuclei.

Design and Implementation of a CO2 Flood Utilizing Advanced Reservoir Characterization and Horizontal Injection Wells In a Shallow Shelf Carbonate Approaching Waterflood Depletion

Description: The first project objective is to utilize reservoir characterization and advanced technologies to optimize the design of a carbon dioxide (CO2) project for the South Cowden Unit (SCU) located in Ector County, Texas. The SCU is a mature, relatively small, shallow shelf carbonate unit nearing waterflood depletion. The second project objective is to demonstrate the performance and economic viability of the project in the field. All work during the second quarter falls within the demonstration proj… more

Interfacial effects in multilayers

Description: There are many physical characterization approaches which evaluate a limited set of structural elements in multilayers: they study a single interface; they study a single layer of material; they study a very small sample of a multilayer. On a broader basis, the interference phenomena on which the performance of x-ray optic multilayers is based integrates over the full area/volume of the multilayer illuminated. In order to gain understanding of the impact of imperfections on multilayer performan… more

Robust Detection of Dynamical Change in Scalp EEG

Description: We present a robust, model-independent technique for measuring changes in the dynamics underlying nonlinear time-serial data. We define indicators of dynamical change by comparing distribution functions on the attractor via L{sub 1}-distance and X{sup 2} statistics. We apply the measures to scalp EEG data with the objective of capturing the transition between non-seizure and epileptic brain activity in a timely, accurate, and non-invasive manner. We find a clear superiority of the new metrics i… more

Methods for Geometric Modeling of Electronic Inspection Data

Description: The Oak Ridge Y-12 plant has implemented a methodology for characterizing parts and assemblies based on their as-measured condition. Complete solid models of each part in an assembly are created to represent these measurements. The models produced can be analyzed for mass properties, relative shape variations, interference checking, and optimal mating between components. This report describes the methodology used to take a relatively sparse set of measured inspection points and generate a repre… more

Discussion of Comments from a Peer Review of A Technique for Human Event Anlysis (ATHEANA)

Description: In May of 1998, a technical basis and implementation guidelines document for A Technique for Human Event Analysis (ATHEANA) was issued as a draft report for public comment (NUREG-1624). In conjunction with the release of draft NUREG- 1624, a peer review of the new human reliability analysis method its documentation and the results of an initial test of the method was held over a two-day period in June 1998 in Seattle, Washington. Four internationally known and respected experts in HK4 or probab… more

A Coherent FMCW LIDAR Mapping System for Automated Tissue Debridment

Description: The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is developing a prototype 850-nm FMCW lidar system for mapping tissue damage in burn cases for the US Army Medical Research and Material Command. The laser system will provide a 3D-image map of the burn and surrounding area and provide tissue damage assessment.

Scaling and performance of a 3-D radiation hydrodynamics code on message-passing parallel computers: final report

Description: This report details an investigation into the efficacy of two approaches to solving the radiation diffusion equation within a radiation hydrodynamic simulation. Because leading-edge scientific computing platforms have evolved from large single-node vector processors to parallel aggregates containing tens to thousands of individual CPU's, the ability of an algorithm to maintain high compute efficiency when distributed over a large array of nodes is critically important. The viability of an algor… more

Surface topographies of two-year coupons of titanium grade 16 from long-term testing

Description: Using an Atomic Force Microscope, we have examined the surface topographies associated with crevice coupons representing the six classes of coupons of Titanium Grade 16 removed from Long-Term Corrosion testing after two years of immersion. Only on coupons removed from Simulated Concentrated Well Water do we observe features which are likely to represent embryonic pit formation. The coupons removed from the Simulated Acidified Well Water were too rough to yield representative measurements.
